Has anyone seen the French-Canadian film "Léolo"? It's really weird about a boy growing up with an equally strange bunch of family relatives. He believes that his father was a Scilian tomato - yes the actual tomato and not a tomato farmer. If you've seen the film, you'll know why. And it doesn't get any less strange from then on. For years I only had a VHS copy without sub-titles - it's French speaking and I don't speak French - but I recently acquired a DVD with English subtitles.
I sometimes think that with these type of films, the director is able to live out his fantasy in however weird a story he chooses to illustrate. It's like looking an abstract Modern Art painting - it means different things to different viewers. And you have perhaps the advantage of not being taken down a conventional path.
