I got Season 1 for Christmas this year. While Michael Chiklis has deservedly won presumable immortality these days as the psychopathically unhinged Vic Mackey, I actually prefer him better as the far more understanding (although still no less tough) Tony Scali. It was nice that the show blended several different formats together: crime drama of course, but also family drama, and every now and them high comedy. As a younger person watching it during its original run in the early 90s, I could really see a lot of myself in his son as well, even in the moments when he'd make a serious error every now and then.
