My son is on this Tom Clancy kick, cause he got the video game Splinter Cell, and he decided to start reading some of his books. He's reading Patriot Games right now, and I have never seen the movie, but we looked it up, and it is Rated R. Is it rated R for violence?? What is in it that makes it Rated R...because the sequel- Clear and Present Danger is only Rated PG-13.
Who has seen it, and did you like it????

It would be the violence - apart from a little language in the movie, there's certainly nothing else that would warrant the rating. I think it was only a 15 here.
If you want to recommend Clancy's best book by far to your son, it has to be Red Storm Rising. I really cannot fault it in any way. It started with the premise on how you could recreate the WW2 Battle of the North Atlantic, and the conflict in Europe, bringing it up to date with the Cold War, but keeping nukes out of it. It's extremely believable.

I thought "Clear And Present Danger" was the best movie of the group.

Movie wise then it has to be The Hunt For Red October but if we're talking Tom Clancy Novels then I have to say that I loved the John Clarke novels particularly Rainbow Six (far fetched to a degree but still very enjoyable) and Without Remorse.

"The Hunt For Red October" is an excellent movie, but I prefer Harrison Ford over Alec Baldwin as Jake Ryan.

I hate to put a dampener on things, but I think Clancy’s somewhat of a hack (not to say I could do any better, of course), his film adaptations leave me cold, though ‘Patriot Games’ isn’t bad for what it is, and the presence of Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones and Sean Bean certainly makes it watchable (even though I suspect I’m one of the few people who preferred Ben Affleck’s take on the character in ‘The Sum Of All Fears’).
If its serious political thrillers you’re after; think ‘The Parallax View’, ‘Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy’, ‘The Tailor Of Panama’, ‘The Quiet American’, ‘The Looking Glass War’ and ‘The Spy Who Came In From The Cold’.

Clear and Present Danger turned out to be on the one channel we don't get, so that stunk. But, he did see The Hunt for Red October, it was even on this afternoon...they play movies over and over in a row, day after day. But, he said he liked it, especially the end. I have no interest in those kind of movies. I don't like political movies or war movies.
