Hugely underrated film noir with a stellar cast headlined by Jack Nicholson (playing a jewel thief…shouldn’t that be John Malkovich? ), Michael Caine (giving one his best performances as Nicholson’s dapper, asthmatic partner-in-crime), Stephen Dorff (stealing Christian Slater’s dream role by playing Jack’s son ---Dorff acquits himself well alongside such a heavyweight ensemble, and remains to this day, an unfairly marginalized actor lost in the Hollywood throng), Jennifer Lopez (an engaging, no frills performance from Jen back in her pre-J-Lo days) and Judy Davis (brilliant actress best known for her work in theatre and Woody Allen films).

This is hands down one of my favourite movies of the 90s. The long-awaited teaming of Nicholson & Caine was a joy to watch; a supremely sleazy double-act. But Dorff was the real revelation to me. Like you say Kash very Slater-esque, his contempt for Nicholson's father figure at times mesmeric and highly believable. Amazing his career stalled as soon as it got going.
J-Ho was also - astoundingly - none too bad either, you could actually be forgiven for thinking that she's a nice enough gal on the face of this (oh the truth, the truth.. ;-( ;-)). Judy Davis borders on perfection.
Excellent film; should be a lot more made in the same vein.

Exactly, I don’t think Dorff is well liked in Hollywood Hordak. If you have the ‘Blade’ DVD, listen to the commentary by Wesley, who takes some *ahem* snipes at young Steve, Dorff gets his own back by telling everyone how big a diva Wes was on set; great commentary track, one of the best I’ve heard.
And what with all the crap that gets released on DVD, its hard to believe a film of this calibre has been overlooked, oh well, guess we’ll have to make do with the old VHS for now.

I have not seen this movie. In fact, I never even heard of this one until Roger Ebert made a mention about it on his TV show recently.
According to the IMDB, the film was budgeted at $26 million, yet made only a fraction of that amount. What the heck happened?
Granted, this movie came out in 1995, before Jennifer Lopez was a big-name star. But how could this movie with such a big-name cast be a flop at the box-office?
