it WAS basically MAD MAX 2 on water and I'll probably be the only person here who liked it but I was just having a "10 Years Ago" flashback - 1995 was the year of DIE HARD 3, BATMAN 3, JUDGE DREDD and WATERWORLD - I liked 'em all (well, maybe not BATMAN FOREVER but I LOVED the U2 song). I remember going to see Mr. Costner's notoriously over-budgeted movie and thinking "It wasn't THAT bad!" it had a great score, brilliant action set-pieces and Dennis Hopper hammed it up good and proper and of course The Mariner was a bad-boy hero. yeah, I know the premise was ridiculous and full of enough plot holes to sink a floating oil tanker but it was a whole lot better than another 'post-apocalyptic' film out that year - anyone recall TANK GIRL? Urgh!

I actually didn't mind it. Maybe that's largely because I heard it was such a lemon that my expectations were ridiculously low. Costner just got arrogant after Dances With Wolves. He decided that he was a truly brilliant director, who should focus on epics of inordinate length to best showcase his directorial genius. Unfortunately, no one else agreed. Kev, Dances With Wolves was the anomolie, not the norm. Boredom is boredom, even when it's on the water or following a Postman around for 3 hours. sheesh. If you build it...they will come...to regret buying tickets!
