I just got this movie not too long ago, had never seen it, and I have watched it 4 times since I got it. Perfect Valentine's Day movie. I love it.
I love the theme song by David Gates also. I think it is exactly the kind of movie that people relate to, and such a cute love story, and it has a happy ending, so it is perfect to me. [Smile]

I have heard of this one before but I wasn't to clued up on who starred in it,richard Dreyfuss is always pretty great and marsha mason is a decent actress though i've only seen her in a couple of roles - heartbreak ridge and - the nick of time, never seen - drop dead fred in which she appears before but I do have it on my shelf and it happens to be one of my wife's favourite's!

I love the little girl that plays Marsha Mason's daughter, I think her name is Quinn Cummings. I can't believe she didn't go on to do more stuff.

I think Quinn was Oscar nominated.

One of my favourite romantic comedies of all time. Great theme song.

Watched the film last night and it was very good.
The cast was great and the dialogue so lovely, smart and witty at the same time.
Love how New York looks in this, i even love the phone booth Dreyfuss spends time in [Smile]

April Fool ain´t no fool, this IS perfect Valentine's Day movie.

Pop trivia: The lead actress (Marsha Mason) was married to Neil Simon at the time. She also starred in 3 other Neil Simon movies (Chapter Two, Only When I Laugh, Max Dugan Returns). All of them are worth watching if only for Simon's snappy (some might say 'stagey') dialogue.

Dreyfuss became the youngest ever Oscar winner for his role.

The film was originally called 'Bogart Slept Here'.

I have these films based on Simon´s writings:

The Goodbye Girl, California Suite, Seems Like Old Times, Only When I Laugh, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Max Dugan Returns,
The Lonely Guy (screenplay only), The Slugger´s Wife, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues and The Marrying Man.
The Marrying Man is the only one i´ve yet to see.

In a way, i´ve liked them all although i have to say that The Goodbye Girl, Seems Like the Old Times, Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues are in a league of their own.
I´m pretty sure i´ve rambled something about these films here but those posts are long gone.

Many thanks to Logan who have encouraged me to get this stuff!

I agree with you folks. Neil Simon was like the Stephen King of stage and screen back in the 80s. While I think that his film work is a mixed bag, The Goodbye Girl, Seems Like Old Times, and California Suite are at the top of my list from that decade. (Overall, any decade, I think that The Odd Couple and Murder by Death are Simon's best screenplays.) Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss are really appealing in The Goodbye Girl, good chemistry between them, and Paul Benedict gets some good laughs directing Dreyfuss as a gay Richard III. All in all, one of the best rom-coms.

Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues were based on his real life experiences growing up.

I saw Mason and Dreyfuss in 'Prisoner of 2nd Avenue' many years ago, and got them to sign my Goodbye Girl video cover!
