I was just recently going through the imdb.com earlier today, which led me to the film "Johnny Got His Gun" (1971).
I remember seeing it on public-TV many years ago, sometime during the mid-80's.
I haven't seen it since, and it rarely pops up on TV, and it's hard to find it in some stores. But it's worth watching! And it's really heartbreaking!
Timothy Bottoms plays a WW1 soldier, whose is badly wounded in a landmine. He lives, but he loses both of his arms and his legs. Even worse, his face is blown off, and he no longer has the ability to see, hear, touch, or smell. He communicates from his hospital bed, twitching his head in Morse code.
If you got the stomach for it, it's very moving and sad to watch.

That book was required reading in the '70s...yeah, that imagery was way creepy made even more so with the Metallica video.
