yes it was on Friday or Saturday nights on NBC from 10:30-midnight every week. Wolfman Jack was the host

I didn't watch it often, but as Sam Hain said, it was a show that Wolfman Jack hosted. However, I have always suspected that most of the acts that performed on the show, actually lip-synched to their records, because the band sounded too much exactly like the recorded version and didn't sound like a live version of a song.
I believe that DVD releases of the show have been sold on infomercials.

Another show similar to "Midnight Special", was "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert". Long before the days of MTV.
For some reason, "Rock Concert" has not been released on DVD yet. I'm guessing it's about licensing issues.
