I agree, I don't understand why Hollywood has the urge to remake all these classics recently. (maybe they've run out of ideas, generic buttheads ) But I do like Johnny Depp and think it's a perfect role for him to play, just not on screen. I wouldn't mind seeing a stage version with Depp, but leave the classics alone!

yeah...johnny depp looks like he will get the part...but they also talked about Christopher Walken, who i think i would prefer...and then they mentioned Michael Keaton...i dunno about that...
doesn't matter, either way i will always prefer the original Willy Wonka

I heard the production company remaking Willy Wonka is owned by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. They remake everything, cause everyone is Clueless any more, and nobody can come up with anything original, so they know that there are so many people who loved the originals, so they know it's a guaranteed money maker, that is all anything comes down to any more- money.

Perhaps the biggest reason why there are so many remakes is that Hollywood executives prefer something that is tried and true, something that has worked in the past. They feel more comfortable with remaking a hit, with some slight updates.
The biggest culprit of clueless remakes is the Disney studios! They have either remade or did unnecessary sequels to almost everything in their domain! It's really lame!
But the biggest problem is that the newer version won't live up to the original. More often than not, the original film still holds up and the remake or sequel flops and is quickly forgotten. Won't Hollywood ever learn?

strange. i read that johnny was officially offered the role.
and i don't know about how great the remake will be, but i am excited that tim burton is behind it all..rather than anyone else. i dunno. we'll just have to see...

Ok, this is *one* remake I *might* not flip out about too hard. Only because Tim Burton is behind it. And Danny Elfman will most likely do the score..can you imagine?? The tunnel scene with all that 'Elfmanesque' creepy tunes? That will be interesting to see..
Slightly Off Topic but... There's a great series on IFC right now called "Decade Under The Influence" that digs into the 70s movie ideals/directors/etc. Talks about how everything didnt have to have a happy ending, or be a "feel good" movie then. You went to a movie like Taxi Driver and didn't think twice about the outcome. Then these 70's directors go on to analyze what's wrong with movies today, and basically tear it down to the studios and really crappy directors with no passion for the art of film making. They all want a "feel good" movie that makes them money.
Back on topic now: Now, Tim Burton is an excellent choice for this Willy Wonka movie..who I'm suspicious of is Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston..smells like money to me.

I agree with Nottoocooljulie about movies now days. Except I never feel good after watching a new movie. I feel ill that I paid money to see crap. But, your right about not worrying about the message/or out come of the story so much. Look at Ode to Billy Jo-boy was that ending pretty controversial, and sad. I don't think anything like that would fly today. Or like I said before, the end of Looking for Mr. GoodBar, or even the Boy in the Plastic Bubble, or Deliverance. I never saw Taxi Driver until maybe 2 years ago, and I knew it was suppose to be kind of scary-but it was beyond that-it was so graphically violent, and really disturbing. I couldn't get that scene out of my head, where he shot all those people right in the head, uugh. It seems like we are the reverse in society now, what we saw on tv/the movies, seemed worse sort of-more real, but it didn't make kids run out and get a gun and go kill their parents and their teachers and all their friends. Now, kids should know that a movie is a movie, but they seem very confused or angry about something, for it to be such a common thing anymore-to see people going crazy and killing people for no reason. It is really sad to watch the news, and not even be shocked anymore when you hear about school shootings, or someone open firing at a McDonalds, on strangers, why have we come to that place?
