The last scene of the movie if I remember correctly is a lady in a hotel room and she suffocted her baby and is singing If that Mockingbird Don't Sing. I know I was young when it was on so I believe late 70's or so. Anyone have a clue.

Susan Dey was a sort of abusive mother. She would lose her patience and lash out at her kid. When the heat comes down she goew to a hotel to hide out . The kid keeps crying. She begs the kid to stop. And sort of without realizing she's doing it she suffocates the kid. The next day the cop (who I believe was Ed Asner?) gets a phone call and says "Mary Jane Harper died last night" at the end of the movie. As far as I know it was a TV movie. I remember seeing it on TV as a kid. The scene I best remember was the mom put a cigerette out in an ashtray, then left the house, and the curtains caght on fire with the baby/small child alone in the house. Another scene I recall is someone says something to the mom while she's pushing her daughter on a swing in the park and she gets all defensive saying stuff like "What? You think I'm not a good mother?"
I would love to see this movie again. I used to wach it on TV as a kid.

me too, mamamia. i remember watching it when i was little. i would like to see it again, but i remember how disturbing i thought it was. it's hard to take, cause of the poor girl. i don't remember much about it, but i remember a scene where the girl ends up in the hospital, i think... and her mom is standing over here trying to smile at her or something and the little girl looks at her with the saddest face and just turns the other way, and rolls over. *sniff*
sad stuff.

I also seem to remember the story line was that the mom was abusive because she had had a bad childhood. Her parents used to lock her in closets and stuff like that.
I'm sure now that Im a parent the movie would break my heart.
Damn...and you just KNOW its probably not even out on video! I think our only chance of ever seeing it again is if they run it on LIFETIME.
Well....for more info go to www.imdb.com and type MARY JANE HARPER CRYED LAST NIGHT.

Thank you guys so much. It has been bugging me forever and it is this movie that just has stuck with me for so long. Very disturbing but would love to see it again to see if its as disturbing as we think or just because we were young it had a lasting impression. Really would love to see it again.

Wow, that movie sounds good...it sounds like something I might have seen too. I looked it up on Ebay, and all I saw was the book Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night. The person selling it, said they sold "haunted" items, and it might have a spirit or 2 in it, so I thought...maybe I'll pass on that...I mean I might get more than I bargained for, and end up with the Entity and Poltergeist, instead of Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night.
