Very sad and powerful animated WWII drama about the horrors of after the bombing of Japan, two orphans walk away from Hiroshima in search of a place to stay.
Depress, sad and unique movie that captures the human spirit. I saw this when i was 15 back in the mid 90's after watching a great review for it, it made me cry and shows that war can be terrible.

Devestatingly powerful film; one of the best movies, animated or otherwise, of all time.

Agreed, there were 4 major movies in the late 90's that made me cry and this was one of them.

One of my favourite animated films and definitely one of the most depressing films I've seen.

Not many films animated or otherwise moved me so much as this film did, very sad film from start to finish, well worth watching if only once.

I'll have to dig this out for a rewatch again as it's been quite awhile since I've watched it.

I tried to choke back the tears this time...wasn't very successful though. Even after watching this countless times..it still gets to me.
Has anyone watched the 2005 live action version?

Nope, is it as good?
In fact i remembered when i was 15 after watching a video pick of the week on this from Siskle and Ebert i rented this and Project A-Ko as i watched this first then cried badly as then it was over, i had to pop in Project A-Ko for something more cheerful, happy and funny to get rid of the tears.

The Japanese live action version is a rather interesting take on the story. Much different from the anime as it's told moreso from the perspective of Seita's Aunt and her family. I can't say if it's better or worse than the anime as it all just depends on individual taste and preference. (I personally still like the anime a little more.) But the live version is alot longer and every character is depicted with alot more depth. And the acting in it is quite good too.
Overall I say you should check it out if you enjoyed the anime..I just can't garantee this one will tug at your heartstrings like the anime does. It just might though.
Good news too: The Live action is uploaded in it's entirety on youtube! It's english subtitled and it's a very good quality upload. So you can check it out at your convenience=)
