Tom Berenger plays Father Michael Pace a New York priest with close ties to the Mafia crime syndicate -- his father is a don. The priest's friend, a mafia boss, is murdered by his wife while having sex with a mistress named Angela (Daphne Zuniga). Pursued by the wife and hitmen, Angela comes to Father Michael for help. The two have a near-deadly encounter with the hitmen, during which Father Michael is wounded, though not severely. He hides Angela in his church, but soon the two are forced to go on the run. Father Michael begins to fall in love with the pursued Angela, and finally succumbs to her vulnerability and charms. For the first time, the priest violates his vows.
"Last Rites" is a movie that was both critically panned and condemned because of the subject matter. If you've never seen it.. I recommend not reading anything about it beyond this thread. It has some great twists and turns that are best left for when you watch it.
Also, great to see Paul Dooley and Adrian Paul in quite different roles.
It is currently available OnDemand from MGMHD if you want to give it a try. By no means a great flick, but better than you will probably read about it on the internet.

just ordered a copy of this on region 1 dvd,i've always had a bit of a soft spot for this one myself, tom berenger's always good value for money, this, platoon, sniper, the substitute etc. - a great actor who always gives it his all no matter what the material's like he's been given to work with.
plus i've always liked daphne zuniga from the first time i saw her starring in the likes of the initiation and the sure thing.
your right valley it's way better than most of the critics would have us believe.

warrior.. glad to that know that someone else enjoyed this movie. I was surprised that it was shunned so bad by so many. There are so many worse films to pick on.

Watched Last Rites last night and i liked it. It was written and directed by Donald P. Bellisario, who created tv-series Quantum Leap and co-created Magnum. This was the only feature film he directed.
The opening scene is very effective and it draws you right into the story. Berenger is fantastic, Zuniga is irresistible, i like the twists and turns and the ending is perfect.
