This fact-based drama is about Tami Maida a teenage girl originally from Canada that became quarterback for the boys high school football team while living briefly in Oregon in 1981. Tami not only led the squad to a winning season but also was crowned homecoming princess.
Though this was a tv movie, it was quite entertaining and the fact it was based on a true story made it even more fun. And if you missed this movie.. it is worth tracking down for the cast alone..
Helen Hunt, John Stockwell, Daphne Zuniga, Tim Robbins, Kathleen Wilhoite and though in a small role.. a fav of mine.. Jonna Lee.
Oh and the real Tami Maida now lives in Prince George, BC. She is married and has three boys who are supposedly fantastic athletes as well.
Check out this link to the Montreal Gazette on Tami Maida from 1980..

I watched "Quarterback Princess" today. It was a made for tv movie that I'm surprised that Disney hasn't jumped on for a remake.
Helen Hunt is outstanding and somewhat believable in the role. While the story is inspiring and feel good, they did just enough to keep it interesting as well.
Don Murray and Barbara Babc0ck were great as Tami's parents. Don Murray was 53 at the time of filming, but he does a railing jump after a game that was almost a way to demonstrate where Tami got some of her athletic ability.
Tim Robbins plays an awkward guy that might have just been a precurser to Nuke Laloosh from "Bull Durham".
Daphne Zuniga had a much bigger role as Tami's sister than I remembered.
Oh and I'm glad I really didn't remember Jonna Lee from this movie. She plays a cheerleader named Tiffany who does not play nice.
But the best supporting actor was Beau Dremann who most of us remember as a jerk from "The Heavenly Kid", he was actually the exact opposite in "Quarterback Princess". Dremann played a great guy who was the first to accept Tami as part of the team and was her friend throughout the movie.
Overall, if you watched this movie as a kid like I did.. it will bring back great memories. If you are watching it for the first time now.. it just might seem a bit cheesy and might not connect with you quite as easily. Still worth it for 80's fans though.. especially for the cast.

I watched "Soul Surfer" last night where Helen Hunt plays the mom of Bethany Hamilton a 13 year old pro surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack while surfing. "Soul Surfer" was based on a true story and it was very inspirational, but it also created somewhat of a surreal moment for me as well.
As I watched the movie.. I couldn't help but think about the parallels between "Soul Surfer" and "Quarterback Princess" with regard to both films being based on a true inspirational story about a teenager girl that overcame incredible obstacles to pursue her dream.
I recommend both movies.. but despite it being a tv movie.. I still prefer "Quarterback Princess". Ok back to the surreal part .. as I watched "Soul Surfer", I couldn't help but feel a bit strange that 28 years had passed since Helen Hunt was the teenager making "Quarterback Princess" and now she was the playing the mom.
If you've never seen "Quarterback Princess" or it has been awhile.. please seek it out!
Just found this and thought it was way cool:

Valley, great post. You reminded me that I have been wanting to see this movie again, because I recently watched Christine with John Stockwell and I remembered him in Quarterback Princess. And good call on Soul Surfer! I thought it was a nice family movie.
