First "Valley Girl" and now "16 Candles".. welcome to the 80's you've been missing.
"Sixteen Candles" is my favorite John Hughes movie. There is so much to enjoy and I'm excited that you finally get a chance to see it.
The 1st time through it will probably be mainly about the hilarious Long Duk Dong, but later viewings will help you realize the awesomeness of the other characters.

Yeah after one viewing I can tell its the kinda film thats always gonna give me somethin each time I watch it.especially anthony michael hall's hilarious performance as the geek.
