This movie is always compared to "The Lost Boys" because they are both vampire movies with a similar plot that were released in 1987. Most critics feel that "Near Dark" is the better of the two.

I just picked up this blu ray for $8.00 at Wal-Mart. I've never seen the movie before, but I've heard good things about it.

What do you all think of this movie?

As a former creature of the night, I have always enjoyed a good vampire flick. My guess is that most people on The Rewind will vote "The Lost Boys" as the best vamp movie of the 80's. I tend to agree because of the music and the feel of the movie especially when Michael is interacting with the bad boys of the night, but "Near Dark" has even more of a jolt for the wreckless blood cravers in some of us.

The Lost Boys

Near Dark

There are a several incredible creepy moments in "Near Dark" and most of them are courtesy of one Joshua Miller who was almost as creepy in "Teen Witch".. though maybe not intentionally..

I like them both as much as each other..."The Lost Boys" was more for the teen market, while ""Near Dark had a much darker feel to it.

But if I had to choose my vote would go to "The Lost Boys"...not because it's better or anything but because it was and still is one of my alltime favourite movies.

I love The Lost Boys but I put Near Dark and Fright Night way above it for 80's vamp films.

I too hav a soft spot for the creatures of the night (im ex goth rewind fact fans) so I love both movies, but I think Near Dark is the better of the two. Its darker, grittier and has a degree of realism to it, if thats possible for a vampire flick hehe. The lost boys is more of a rock video type vampire film..very glossy, long haired rock n roll type vamps in long leathers.all very cool of course.plus no other film could get away with death by stereo.a classic.
But for creepy, dark n dirty, desperate vampires I go for Near Dark everytime.and lance henrikson is superb in this film.

I'm actually shocked that so many people are picking "Near Dark" over "The Lost Boys". It is not really even that close for me.. I agree that "The Lost Boys" is not really that scary, but more of movie that is consider 80's cool.

I basically forced someone to watch "Near Dark" with me recently and they laughed harder at "Near Dark" than they ever did "The Lost Boys".. While watching it .. she said.. "I didn't know Chet from Weird Science was really a vampire?".

Like I said before.. "Near Dark" is definitely creepier and it fits into most people's view of what a vampire should be like.. but for me .. I'll take a vampire cave with a tribute to Jim Morrison over riding around in a tinted van any day of the week.

The Lost Boys is more entertaining than Near Dark but the latter works as a kind of experimental vampire / modern western hybrid, interesting movie to say the least and the fact that half the cast from Aliens are in it makes it all the more compelling (notice the scene where Caleb hobbles past a movie theatre screening 'Aliens').

Lost Boys also had the good sense to play out as a comedy-drama, whereas some of the over-acting in Near Dark seems unintentionally funny, and it often swings wildly from deadly serious to surreal humour.

I never even heard of "Near Dark" until sometime in the 200X's; I discovered this on DVD as a rental @ the now-defunct "Hollywood Video".

This film is superb; a very atmospheric & moody vampire flick with an extremely disturbing tone/vibe - unlike any other vampire movie I've seen. Very good acting & effects; you really believed that these people were vampires (in the context of the film, of course).

This film is FAR superior to "The Lost Boys", which it's unfairly compared to. LB was much more of a tongue-in-cheek teen comedy in many ways, whereas ND was a much more serious horror film.

Being a huge fan of "Aliens" (1986), there is an obvious unintentional "connection" between the two films; both ND & Aliens star Lance Henricksen, Bill Paxton, & Jeanette Goldstein. It's almost as if they had the cast already put together for Aliens & then they just transitioned over to ND.

I totally agree with you. There is no comparison between The Lost Boys, which is fun, and a mini-masterpiece like Near Dark from the great Kathryn Bigelow.

I don't think that the connection of Near Dark to Aliens is unintentional. Aliens was out in 86, Near Dark in 87. Bigelow was later married to James Cameron who directed Aliens.

Agreed. ND is a horror masterpiece.

Yes, I knew about the Cameron/Bigelow connection - obviously this was no coincidence. It's just that I've never seen two unrelated movies having much of the same cast come out so close together. What probably happened here is that after Aliens was filmed (probably in '85), Bigelow wanted much of the same cast in Near Dark (or maybe it was a timing issue), so they ended up being in that film as well; I'm guessing ND was probably filmed in '86. It seems like they just went from one job to the other.
