It was a pretty interesting thriller from the Cannon Group. Directed by Jerry Schatzberg (No Small Affair)
Starring Christopher Reeve, Mimi Rogers and unusual roles from Kathy Baker (street girl) and Morgan Freeman (pimp). Released on dvd in 2003.
Here´s some interesting facts taken from the Wikipedia:
This was a long time pet project of Christopher Reeve, but he was having difficulty getting the film financed. When the Cannon Group acquired the rights to the fourth and final Superman film, Reeve agreed to do the film partly because Cannon promised to give Street Smart the financial backing it needed.
Morgan Freeman was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe (among other honors) for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role, giving his acting career a major boost.
Anyone else seen this?

Not a bad movie. Reeve was trying hard to shake his Superman image, but he isn't quite cast right for this. It's also hard seeing Freeman in this playing a bad guy, because he's burned in our minds as the good guy now.

I see this 1987 thriller has just had a blu Ray release,I 've watched it way back upon it's original release and remember it being none to bad overall but also nothing overly amazing.
Would love to check it out again to see how I feel about it now,i've just got a gut feeling I would enjoy it a lot more!

"Street Smart" is a great, underrated film. Very grim & gritty, with fantastic acting.
I think CR really wanted to break out of the "Superman" persona with this role, which was a completely different type of film for him.

Street Smart was indeed the first Morgan Freeman performance nominated for an Oscar, and he's just scary great as a pimp, as is Kathy Baker as his hooker.
The plot certainly is intriguing, but I do think that Christopher Reeve comes off as kind of lightweight against the other performances. It's pretty good, but it could've been better.

I feel the whole point of the CR character in the film was that he was supposed to be a "fish out of water" as the somewhat weak reporter who was investigating street life & got in way over his head. The scene when he got beaten up by the MF character was interesting, because it was so unexpected.
