Okay, been trying to catch up some Old School Cinema that I somehow missed. I rented this one over the weekend and am sorry to say maybe Im old and my soul is dying a bit - cuz I didnt love it.
Thoughts on the movie?

It's OK, but not one I go back to regularly. The plot is a little slow, the graphics from the space-bound scenes definately dated by today's standards (more so than most of it's contemporaries) and the whole thing seems to kinda limp along, where the premise demands a lot more pace.
I don't dislike it, but I do agree with mama - not a top 10.....

I agree with what Paul said; the special effects are slightly dated and clunky (they never really worked even back in the day - I always felt that models would've made for more exciting battle scenes).
I liked the stuff in the trailer park. It has some good character and feels nicely Spielbergian; but as soon as they get into space I get bored - which is precisely what shouldn't happen (one-dimensional villains don't help). As a result, the whole film feels a little lumpen and weak.
Plus sides; the trailer park, the music, the idea (sword in the stone).
Having said that, it still makes me feel nostalgic.

LOL don't worry guys the way the cinema world is going it will be remade to the 21st century CGI glory. but like everyone else has said it was a little chuncky on the special effects I did like the death blossum on the ship though.

I enjoy this movie .. but mainly for the non-space stuff Logan mentioned. As an arcade/video game player, the premise was like a dream for any of us that played games like Galaga or the DMK fav Tempest.
I still have my "Cheap Thrills" arcade t-shirt from when I won a local tournament for high score on Asteroids!! Good times

Excellent flim, the effects were pretty good as far as I recall. Oh how I clocked every aracde game under the Sun in the hope that some day, some where, some one would invite me on the kind of adventure that Alex went on.
Needless to say, this wish didn't mean I'd jump into cars with strange old men in the middle of the night!

Agree with what everyone has said for sure, but it is so easy to put aside what I recognize about some of the special effects in the same way I can about Tron simply because of when it was made and the age I was at the time. I own and am still very fond of this movie and I know a lot of it had to do with this very kind of magical five or six year period when some of the best movies that kids today re still discovering were made.
We could go on for hours about the years leading up to 1984, but let's just look at the several months leading up to the release of The Last Starfighter which came out smack in the middle of summer (second week of July).
I usually like to say a little something about why I like the movies I do and like to hear the same from others, but I won't do that here, but here is just what came out within 90 days before TLS...
Splash Romancing The Stone Police Academy Up The Creek Sixteen Candles Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Streets of Fire Star Trek III: The Search For Spock Ghostbusters Gremlins Top Secret The Karate Kid
I mean just look at that list! It was like they just couldn't miss for some reason and for me The Last Starfighter just rode this wave of good feelings right into a special place in my memories. Never took itself too seriously even with the fate of the galaxy on the line and they just made it a ripping good time! They just do not put together summers like that anymore.

Summer '85 was rock-solid too! If only we knew then how lucky we were! I never realised as a kid that things weren't always going to be that good. Still, that's the great thing about 'art' (popular or otherwise), we can always revisit it whenever we want to.

85 crushed it Logan! Absolutely brilliant. The whole 80-85 was just amazing, but 85 had a few of my very favorites of any decade and of all time!
