My friend asked me anout and Alternate Ending GOONIES and I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he mentioned a scene where they ran afoul a giant octopus and I seem to remember hearing that there WAS a scene like that originally but that it was cut.
Are there any DVDs out with the octopus footage ?

One of the Octopus scenes is in the DVD's deleted scenes section I believe. There is a reason it was cut from the movie!

Goonies had several scenes cut from it. The most famous being the Octopus scene (which Data referred to at the end of the movie). When you watch it - as Valley said - you can see why it was cut! They also cut a scene when the guys go to the store to get supplies after they leave the house, this is where the map gets burned by Troy. It's a nice scene and they should have kept it in the movie. There's also a short scene with Data trying out one his gadgets. They are all on the DVD:
What isn't on the DVD are the cut scenes where Andie takes the Goonie oath (before sending up Troy's bucket). This precedes another scene where they all realise that they are covered in leeches (from the wishing well).
They also shot some scripted scenes with Gorillas that didn't work, so they scrapped them partway through and they never wound up in any cut.

I agree, there were a lot scenes cut before the release of Gooonies. To date the full, restored scenes were seen only once and that was when the Disney Channel showed it a few years ago. The octupus scene was included. It appeared just after the character Andy was made to walk the plank.

Dacaria just reminded me; they also cut a scene where (I think) Mikey and Steff walk the plank, which I believe was aired in the Disney Channel version. The scene with the leech and the oath I don't think were ever aired, though.

Watching "The Goonies" in HD! I wish the Blu-ray would have been released in the US, but StarzHD is 1080i and it looks pretty decent. Of course, the Truffle Shuffle in HD is something you might only want to endure in HD once.

I kind of like the octopus scenes, but I like them in general, so I'm biased. The scene where Troy burns the map is a good scene and I wish it was left. My kid loves this movie and I have to play the deleted scenes for her after the movie is over along with Cyndi's video.

You should just re-edit them back in and watch a 'full' version. I had to do that with Explorers.
I think the Octopus looks bad, but when you like a film more always seems better than less. The other scenes (map burning, Data's gadget, Steff and Mouth on the plank, etc) should have been left in. The Goonie oath which is unavailable anywhere, as well as the leeches should all be in there too.
If Warner have any smarts at all, they'll throw together a bigger special edition for the anniversary next year, and put all that stuff on the DVD.
