I too was a deep fan of the franchise when it was at its peak. They do need to bring back the original series; hard to believe it hasn't been on North American TV since it finally came to an end in 1996 (probably about 3 years or so longer than it needed to, but why knock longevity?). Eastman and Laird may not be that keen on it given that it's rather lighter than their concept, but you know, it's just a thrill to watch, and for our purposes is in many ways the perfect satire of the 80s cartoon in general, with the constant 4th wall breakings. And yes, the first film still holds up wonderfully today; too often films meant to cash in on fads rush out some haphazard script and assume the audience will embrace whatever it is. But the creative team there thought everything out well, and it shows, striking the right balance between light and dark (and that is largely the problem of current incarnations, which are far too dark). All in all the concept is great, and we should be seeing more from them in years to come.
