The Great 80s Kiss-Off OK, so my argument that Some Kind of Wonderful's Hardy Jenns is the Best John Hughes Villain has been universally defeated by the 80s Nation. I'm not going to take defeat lightly.
Today's argument: The kissing scene between Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Keith (Eric Stoltz) in the same movie is the hottest make-out scene of any 80s flick. Right? ("And we're gonna destroy Lincoln tonight ... alllriiiiight?")
You want a list, don't you? OK...
Top 5 Make-Out Scenes in 80s Movies:
5. THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) The participants: Wesley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) The location: Outside Prince Humperdinck's castle Music: "Happy Ending" (Mark Knopfler) Why it's not No. 1: Any make-out scene narrated by Peter Falk isn't going to win.
4. RISKY BUSINESS (1983) The participants: Joel (Tom Cruise) and Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) The location: Joel's living room (and staircase ... and bedroom...) Music: "Lana" (Tangerine Dream) Why it's not No. 1: Joel had to pay for it. Ouch.
3. VALLEY GIRL (1983) The participants: Randy (Nicolas Cage) and Julie (Deborah Foreman) The location: Backseat of Fred's car. Music: "Time To Win" (Gary Myrick & The Figures) Why it's not No. 1: The atmosphere ... Fred chases Stacey around the car while Randy tries to convince Julie he isn't a stalker. Otherwise, it has "Let's make punk rock babies" written all over it.
2. SAY ANYTHING (1989) The participants: Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) and Diane (Ione Skye) The location: In the rain Music: "In Your Eyes" (Peter Gabriel) Why it's not No. 1: You can see the whole "You're going to dump me and give me a pen, aren't you?" in Lloyd's face. You need a stopwatch to measure the time from kiss to kiss-off here. Ione, you wench!
1. SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL (1986) The participants: Watts and Keith The location: Gas station garage where Keith works Music: "She Loves Me" (Stephen Duffy) Why it's No. 1: Spontaneity. Longevity. Music that's -- dare I say? -- classic. Pardon the Journey pun, but lots of lovin', touchin' and feelin'. Throw in the whole "Whoa, I'm suddenly making out with my tomboy best friend who's really a smokin' hot drummer vixen" factor, and dinner is served.
OK, what's your opinion? Am I right or am I right? What other classic 80s scenes do you think belong on the list?

I don't think it would really be a top fiver, just a strange honorable mention, but my favorite kiss goes to Dana Cannon's smooch on Officer Halleck's lips to win the arm wrestling competition, not just because it comes completely out of nowhere, but also since John Murray pumps a lot of faux passion into it, coupled with James Keach's horrified reaction at being bested by his archenemy yet again. It also gives across Cannon's message to Halleck quite clearly: "You can strike back at me all you want, Hankie, and I will respond, but not with your violence, because I don't hold grudges and I don't stoop to your level. So go right ahead and take me down, but it'll be you coming down in the end."
By the way, what were the results of the last poll?

My vote (surprise surprise) goes to Some Kind Of Wonderful, as above.
Honorable mention needs to go to the kiss between Claire and Bender at the end of Breakfast Club, whilst sat on the hood of Claire's mom's car. Not so much the kiss itself, but the impact that would be having inside the car.

I have to say that Can't buy me love is a top 3 for me. That could even be my favorite. What about the goonies when the girl thinks she's kissing Brandt (sp) but it ends up being his kid brother. Ha.

Best kiss? I would put Kelly McGillis and TOm Cruise's(Maverick) kiss after arguing in the middle of the street after a hot pursuit chance. Kelly explains that she had to criticize Mav's flying and admits to him finally that she has fallen for him. Such tension, such emotion, just a classic scene. There's a bunch of other kisses that have escaped me, but I'm sure they will come back to me.

"Some Kind Of Wonderful" has always been the best for me.During that kiss when there is a close up on his hands, he clenches them into a fist against her hips....just feel the pent up passion!! Love it!! I would watch it, rewind and watch it again. Thank god for DVD where flicking back to a fave scene is so much easier.

The ending of Secret Admirer I liked, when Loughlin and Howell dive into the water and finally kiss.

but I also think the kiss between Lisa and Joe in Fire with Fire....when he sneeks in to her bedroom at night....and she's asleep...I think that is a pretty good one too.

Everyone knows my #1 is easily "Valley Girl", but I'll go with Randy and Julie 'linking' at the bar to The Plimsouls as the best kiss.
Also, I have to agree with Gordon about "Can't Buy Me Love" being in the top 3. I mean what's better than making out as you ride off into the sunset on your lawnmower? Ok, a Porsche might have been better. There is no substitute...oh wait I could have had a Tic-Tac-Tile wagon.
Riptide, an aqua adventure with Lori Loughlin does sound appealing. "Secret Admirer" is such a great flick.

Val that one with Randy and Julie was awesome too! I had forgotten about that one, great song to accompany it by the Plimsouls.
Thanks for reviving the topic too!!! You had to dig pretty deep to find it I bet!

I like Jerry kissing Ms. Farmer in Three O'Clock High. I'm also surprised no one has mentioned Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald at the end of Pretty in Pink with the big build up and OMD song playing.

I've heard from a lot of females that they think Andrew McCarthy's onscreen kisses are pretty cringeworthy.

I love Andrew McCarthy and he was a total hottie circa PIP, Mannequin, St. Elmo...but I agree, his kissing style, at least on screen, is too jerky. There's like no flow to it, no smoothness. In a nutshell, "my thighs don't go up in flames" when I watch him . Hahahaha!!

I agree about Andrew McCarthy....it was embarrassing to watch him kiss Jacqueline Bisset in Class and then Ally Sheedy in St. Elmo's Fire...you'd think in Class...maybe he had never kissed ANYONE ever....but by the time he did several more movies....he should have got better at it....and seriously couldn't one of the women he was with...give him some pointers?

I vote for Randy & Julie's "A Million Miles Away" Kiss at the CLUB...sure a kiss at a nightclub may not be the most romantic place..but if you have THE PLIMSOULS playing in the background i'm sure you can make it work
