I just watched the Special Edition behind the scene stuff, I haven't watched the new version yet though.
But it was so cool...to know how much went in to the making of that movie. I loved that Francis Ford Coppola had a group of the original cast...Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell and Diane Lane, all fly by a private plane to Napa Valley, and they hung out all weekend, and someone videotaped it, it was so cool to see them cooking dinner together and talking about memories of stuff that we all have seen from the movie, but they were actually a part of it. He showed them the movie in the new version that he had always wanted to release it as, I am hoping to watch it today.
But, the special features of this movie are so cool.
I liked that he got so many of them in an interview...I could not believe what C. Thomas Howell looked like...he was scary looking, he has aged terribly....he seemed really mean too...I couldn't get over what he looked like though....I would never have known he was him if I hadn't heard his voice. He looked more like Tim Curry than C. Thomas Howell. What is cool about the Outsiders is how many people they had in it who turned out to be the biggest movie stars of our time, and even the people who weren't cast in the movie, ended up going on to do other things and were famous too.
To have Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe,Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, and Ralph Macchio in a movie together...was awesome.
Francis Ford Coppola made them all spend time with each other hanging out in the Curtis house...they even had to sleep there, Ralph Macchio had to sleep outside with newspaper on him to get in to the part of Johnny. They played soccer together as The Greasers and the Socs....it was so cool to see all the behind the scenes stuff.
Leif Garrett looked awful in the interview, he and C. Thomas Howell don't look anything like they use too. It was rather scary. I just keep seeing C. Thomas as this cute guy in Secret Admirer and The Hitcher and Soul Man...and now he looked like a bum, he talked like his career just went down the tubes, and it was kind of a bummer.
Francis Ford Coppola was the one who majorly improved with age.
All the guys in this movie were unbeliveably good looking. They are what teen idols should look like, they all looked like they had fun together, they all seemed down to earth, they all fit their parts perfectly.
I liked Seeing S.E. Hinton talking about the movie too, and showing everyone where the scenes took place at.
I like when they all read a description of the character that they played from out of the book at the end.
I was totally shocked by how they got all these awesome people together for so long to do all the stuff they did, because they all had to work a long time together, and they were all over the place filming different parts of the movie, and how they kept it all organized was pretty cool, I think they said that alot of the cast stayed at the same hotel during shooting the movie, and the Socs were treated much better than the Greasers, so the Greasers built up a resentment for them, just like in the movie. So, that was cool.
I can't wait to watch it now.

I have the original DVD. The Special Edition one is still full price here ($19.82 I believe it was). I may get it after Christmas. Do you think the Special Edition is worth the full price?

Because it had a ton of extra stuff....it was so cool. It has a whole seperate DVD of all new stuff, and the interviews with the cast and them talking about it is really cool. Just to see the changes in them in 20 years.
I am going to watch the new version today, but it looks like a ton of the movie was cut out, Rob Lowe said mostly the scenes he was in were cut, and he always wondered why...like wasn't his acting good enough. So, he said to see those scenes added in now, made him feel like he got back what he had missed out.
The new version, they said develops the relationship between the brothers, and you get more background on the characters to know more about their personal lives, especially with Johnny...on what made him such a nervous wreck.

ISIS, Do you mean the Special edition version has a ton of the movie cut out (cut out a lot of Rob Lowe's scenes) or do you mean the original release on DVD? I'm confused. I think next trip to Walmart, which may be a while since it's Christmas shopping mania out there, I will buy the special edition DVD.

The original cut a ton of the movie out,if it were not for the new version, I would never have known how much more there was to this movie.

Whoo-hoo, I got onto the 80's rewind! I was having trouble getting logged on. Oh well, anyway, I seem to remember at one time seeing The Outsiders movie on tv, and it may have had part of the original scenes in it. I seem to remember Ponyboy in the courtroom on the stand with his bleached blonde hair? Am I correct about this? I'm sure this could have happened, because tv versions of movies often have either extra scenes or scenes deleted, just like Fast Times on TBS a few weeks ago.
