I am watching the original Gremlins right now and I was wondering how it would come out if it were remade today? You know they have remade The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but left it in the time frame as the original, they did that with Psycho also.

What other films from our favorite decade could you see as a successful remake today. I mean following the same storyline and settings but just different actors?

Ghostbusters - starring Will Ferrell as Peter Venkmen, Greg Kinnear as Ray Stantz, Jim Carrey as Egon Spengler, Nicole Kidman as Dana Barret, Ving Rhames as Winston Zeddemore, Kathy Griffin as Janine Melnitz, and Giovanni Ribisi as Louis Tully.

Devolution here,

I think Ving Rhames would be a bit to large, and not that funny. I agree with most of the other choices though.

I mentioned this before, I don't think that remaking a comedy unless like 30 years pass is a good idea.

-Hugh Jackman as Orin Scrivello, D.D.S
-Destiny's Child as Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon

I would like to see somoen remake Deadly Friend, and maybe make it a bit better, although how they would top the scene with the basketball is beyond me.

Isn't Deadly Friend the one with Kristy Swanson?? How about Sarah Michelle Gellar in the remake, especially since she is so big into horror right now?

Yentl, starring Fran Drescher!

Seriously, perhaps The Towering Inferno, with Kevin Costner as Paul Newman, Sandra Bullock as Faye Dunaway, Hugh Jackman as Steve McQueen, Dakota Fanning as the young child in peril, Paul Newman (for old times sakes) and Joanne Woodward as the old couple, and OJ Simpson as OJ Simpson.

I'll never forget the Basketball Decapitation form DEADLY FRIEND. Only to be topped by the Shotgun Decapitation in COFFY.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is too old to take over the Kristy Swanson role. Maybe Dakota Fanning can do it in a few years.

I was watching "Gremlins" this morning on HBO Comedy and I noticed that it couldn't decide what it wanted to be. It was too violent to be a comedy, but too silly to be a horror movie. I think someone could remake this one into a straight horror movie.

My dream cast (In no particular order):

-Hilary Duff as Belinda Peltzer (A female character based on Zach Galligan's character Billy Peltzer)

-Ryan Reynolds as Christopher Beringer (A male version of Phoebe Cates' character Kate Beringer)

-Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates as Randall and Lynn Peltzer

-Corey Feldman as Gerald (Judge Reinhold's banker character)

-Gary Busey as Murray Futterman

-Bobby Lee as Robert Wing (Mr. Wing's grandson)

-Howie Mandel and Michael Winslow as Sherrif Frank and Deputy Brent

-Amy Irving as Ruby Deagle

-Brett Kelly (The kid from "Bad Santa") as Pete

Despite some of the comic actors in the cast, this would make a good cast for a straight horror remake.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

No new dream casts, but I do have an idea.

I would remake "The Last American Virgin", only this time it would be called "Virgin".

Once again, it was a movie that couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a comedy or a drama. I figured it could be a straight drama this time and it would have a different ending.

In this version, the rejected kid plans his revenge. He studies the cases of serial killers and combines their ideas into one huge murder spree. A party full of kids are brutalized in ways that push the R rating to its' outer limits. At the end, the reject lets out a feral shriek, puts a gun to his nose and shoots his face off. As we pull away from the body, the credits roll.

Yeah, it's still an unhappy ending, but considering it's a straight drama, it's not out of place.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

I wouldn't mind seeing Suburbia being remade, a child getting killed in the intro and ending are just so bleak. I still bums me out. Would love to see some changes, maybe talking about the plight of Squeegee kids. The band sequences in the original movie were good though, I just seem to like these 80's movies with punkers in them like Repo Man, Thrashin, even Valley Girl.

I saw Lords of Dogtown last week, it was awesome, I wish something like that was made in the 80's.

I'd like to see Clive Barker's Night Breed remade. It was based on his book Cabal. It could have been really good but the story lines were confusing and hard to follow.

I'd like to see NO MORE films remade.

Taking a classic film, and then remaking it with a bunch of pretty-faced 18 year olds and adding on a HipHop soundtrack to it doesn't do anything except push me further away from hollywood.

I dont deny the teens of today their own "Movie Stars", but it seems that when you take something that wasn't bad in the first place, and then "repackage it" for tdoay, that just means adding more visual FX, adding really bad actors, and adding some ridiculously out of place Street-Culture HipHop vibe to the whole thing.

Today "Suburbia" would be more about kids stealing MP3 players and trying to get their homebrewed Rap record in the hands of Puffy Combs than about forraging for food in unlocked garages. Oh yeah, and only 1 guy in the cast would be white, and he'd be an Emenim clone [Razz]

I'd like to see a remake of Spaceballs because they'd absolutely go to town on ripping the Star Wars prequals to shreds, along with the various Star Trek incarnations.

I'll have to adjust my "Little Shop Of Horrors" remake dream cast considering that Destiny's Child is breaking up. Unfortunately, I can't think of another group of black female singers.

I'll have to think about that, but anyway:

I put this in the "16 Candles Sequel" thread, but I figured I'd put it here as well.

If they do a sequel to "16 Candles", Samantha should make ends meet by being either a stripper or a nude model. I've seen what Molly Ringwald looks like now, so you can understand why I think so. [Wink]

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

Suburbia is amazing if you have any connection to the punk scene of the 80's...if you do, or are just curious, watching this..and Another State of Mind..and also The Decline Of Western Civilization, are all required reading [Smile]

Suburbia has some live performances by TSOL and some other California staple punk bands whos names now escape me.

However, its an ultra low budget movie with some really, REALLY bad acting on the part of the adults. The punks all come off convincingly because they were real punks, not actors. The lead in the movie however was an actor, he went on to be in Platoon as a minor character as I recall. And its got Flea from the RHCP's. I dig it.

Stripes. Probably with Vince Vaughan as Winger, and Jack Black as Ox. I don't know who would play Russell. Probably Luke Wilson.

Oh John, please don't say you want Gremlins with Hillary Duff as the lead! ACK! I just don't like her and I have no idea why. But yeah, I'd rather not have a female version of Billy in a Gremlins movie, or at least not Hillary Duff or Lindsay Lohan in the role.

Sorry, rant over, heh.

Okay, I'm sure THIS would've been the cast for Ferris Bueller's Day Off if it were made right:

Ferris- Gary Busey
Cameron- Chris Tucker
Sloane- Dolly Parton
Ed Rooney- Tahj Mowry (That one kid from "Smart Guy")
Jeanie- Jackie Chan
Boy in Police Station- Of course, Fann Wong

It'll go like this, see:
Ferris: Ferris, Ferrrrrris . . . sounds a bit like ferr . . ferrets. Which are Commies.
Cameron: (just have him say cliched phrases when something bad happens to him like, "Hell no!" and something about "crazy white people")
Sloane: (does not need to speak, Ferris stares)
Ed Rooney: You kids get back to class!
Cameron: Hell no!
Jeanie: I will catch Ferris! (does Kung-fu and repeatedly fails to catch Ferris, falls into things a lot)

It's genius.
