This Susan Seidelman film from 1985 really is a good comedy that can make you laugh and makes you really get the feel of what the 80s were like in New York. It stars Rosanna Arquette and Madonna. Rosanna stars as Roberta a bored housewife who sets out on an adventure that she has been following in the paper. Things get confused and her boyfriend's friend thinks she is Susan. She gets amnesia and forgets who she is so she thinks she is Susan too. Supporting performance by Aidan Quinn and Robert Joy.
What I found interesting about this film today is that Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn were originally considered for the two lead roles of this film. The studio wanted to keep the budget under 5 million so they cast unknowns at the time, one of which became a massive pop icon. Need I say more on that one? Anyway Ellen Barkin was also considered for a role. It is really interesting to learn all of these facts about some of your favorite films that you almost have no idea about. Anyway....what are your fond memories of this film.
My favorite scene has got to be when Madonna is washing herself in the community bathroom. Drying her armpits with the hand blow dryer!!! Classic for how she was thought of at the time.

ooooooooo the movie would have bit if Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn were the leads....it would'nt have been the same now way!!!
I love Desperately Seeking Susan! Really who wasn't fascinated with 80's Madonna she was everywhere. Her videos were on MTV 24/7! "Get into the Groove" was bigger then this movie at the time i'm sure. Aidan Quinn ooo very hot! I liked Rosanna in the movie too. Man it's even hard to imagine Diane and Goldie????
Was this what started the whole Madonna clothes trend?.......cause like Jess I remember the whole restroom scene......her cool suitcase with the skulls...and her clothes the jacket....the style that was Madonna.

Oh yeah, it would have been like the Banger Sisters if those two would have made it. But we must remember that they would have been in their mid 30s then.
My favorite Madonna role is probablly as All the Way Mae in A League of Their Own!

Don't forget Diane & Goldie were also nearly 20 years younger when DSS was being cast...still, I'm glad Roseanna & the Big M landed the roles because this is definitely a case of perfect casting.
Unfortunately for Ms. M, the role of Susan was tailored & expanded based on her notoriety, so others were anxious to exploit her as an actress, which she was clearly not. Outside of A League of Their Own" -- in which she landed a decent 'showcase' part in a vastly talented ensemble cast -- her movies are generally unfavorably viewed by audiences & critics.
I'm a Roseanna fan since "Baby It's You" so that's why I like "Susan."

I just think the movie wouldn't at all be the same if it had ended up with Diane Keaton and Goldie as the leads...could you imagine?
Diane was known for Annie Hall and The Godfather....I love Goldie but she was so typecast as the loveable ditzy blonde then..Private Benjamin..and she was probaly around 40 then?...who would have played who.....there's no way it would have been the 80's classic it is now for me....Goldie in the get-up Madonna was in???? lol
