Devolution here,

If you lived through a good or bad event, or even if it was just important to you, like going to see Return of the Jedi, what is your most memorable event of the 80's that you remember first hand?

We are DEVO

Interesting thoughts keep coming back to me. Personally, I'd include June 25, 1988 (my wedding day); May 16th 83/86 (18th / 21st Birthdays) and June 2nd, 81 (day I left school and started earning a little cash of my own).

From a more global standpoint, probably the ones that stick with me are Live Aid in 85, The Falklands conflict in 81/2, and the Hostage crisis and subsequent siege at the Iranian Embassy in London. These had more impact on me as a Londoner than things like Lennon's death or the Challenger disaster, because I was a little more detatched from these.

Good topic, Devolution,

I’m sure that I’ll come up with better stuff later on, but the first things that come to mind are the arrival of the cd player and the explosion of the Challenger.

I remember almost getting killed in April 1985-I went out to my boyfriend's house, with my cousin, who dated my boyfriend's brother. They had horses, and I never rode one, and some how his brother convinced me to get on one with him, with no saddle. We went up to the end of the road, and my boyfriend and my cousin, followed us, on a motorcycle, the motorcycle spooked the horse, and it took off back to the barn, and I was sliding off the side and I almost hit the side of the barn, and my friend, grabbed me, and flipped me over to the other side, I fell off-hit my hip on a rock-my shoes flew off, he hit his arm on the barn, and it knocked him off, the horse went in the barn, and if we would have stayed on, we would have lost our heads. I remember my mother almost killing me for being there, and I missed school the next day, and had to go get my hip xrayed, and in the waiting room, was my boyfriend's brother-he had gone to work, and his arm was swollen, so he was getting xrayed too, and his arm was broken. This was some weeks before the prom. So, when we all went to the prom together, he cut the cast off himself, so he didn't have it on for the prom. His mom saw me , and said how did I ever get him on that horse, cause they use to take him to 4-H shows as a kid, and he would throw up, because he was terrified of horses.

That whole year-1985- was a great year, cause we all hung out constantly, and had so many other memories that were much better than that one, so I miss what it was like just to be going out with my friends, for pizza, and to the movies, and hanging at the mall, and cruising around town, and goofing off, renting movies and hanging out together- I had a great bunch of memories.

But, my best memory is Sept.27, 1989- That's the day I meet my husband.

This is a great topic! It just brings back sooo many memories. I would have to say it was the last day of schol my 8th grade year. Let me see that was 1986 amd you always know there were a few friends that you would never see again. Now remember this was time time Miami Vice was huge! Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas. We all had nicknames from the TV show. Mine was Larry Zito, my friend Jason was Sonny, another friend Chris was Tubbs, and finally Steve was Larry Partner. Just can't remember the name at this time. When you look back at those days we had no worries, nothing at all. It was just about having fun!!!! Now 17 years later I look back and say, "I wish I could only go back for 1 day." We all know that will never happen. But it is fun to remember those good old days.

I think the moments I remember the most for news was when a terrorist truck crashed into an american army unit in Beirut killing over 200 soldiers, I remember that quite vividly and was quit affected by it. The tylenol deaths with tampering also I recall. The Royal Wedding in 1981 stands out as well. Back to the Future and Goonies in 1985 was very fun. 1987 my brother was born.

Lennons death in 1980
The Challenger disaster
There are plenty of other dates that effected me in differing manners both good and bad.

I remember when I was in 5th grade and we were getting ready to go on a field trip to the George Washington Carver Museum. He is the guy who invented a lot of stuff from the peanut. Anyway, It was in October 1984. I remember the night before we were to leave I saw on the news that Jon Erik Hexum had accidentally shot and killed himself while on the set of his series "Cover Up". That was so heartbreaking because he was so gorgeous and he definitely would have been a big star. I also remember around that same time when Michael Jackson's hair caught fire making the Pepsi video.

Those were the first things that popped into my mind when I read the question. I also remeber sitting in class watching the Challenger launch and then explosion. It was horrible.

The day I was born (December 22nd, 1982, for the record)

The day I saw "The Little Mermaid"

The day I first saw "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"

My first day of elementary school

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...The Rock Steady Flamethrower
