When you think a movie is good,...
You rate it by the settings, stars in it,the producer and director, plot, the quality of the picutes or what?

call me stupid.. but I don't think a good story, settings or anything will make it good...I think the director and producer make it good....

any comments?

I believe its a combo of all those things. If any one of them stinks it doesnt matter it will show in the end product. What would be a better question is why do we like movies that tank both theatrically and at the box office? Crummy script, horrible acting, bad direction, etc, etc, doesnt matter we like the movie. A couple that pop up in my mind that I like are Night Of The Comet and Starship Troopers. Quite honestly theres no stellar performances in either, the stories arent great but damn it I like em. Now why is that? Im sure anyone that reads this will have a minimum of 2 movies that will fall into the categories Ive described.

Images in a movie really get me. Of course there has to be a good story, but if a movie is shot really well... I respect that. Movies, for me at least, are an escape and it is almost impossible to get reallly into a film unless the images on screen are interesting in some way. That is why I think I am such a big fan of 9 1/2 weeks, and Blade Runner.

Monsoon..you have a point...But, the movie I like doesn't necessarily mean there on the top ten at either the theater or box office....

Well, I guess the question is misleading....

Devolution here,

Good topic,

Rating a movie has long been a pastime of many of us (after all we wouldn't be judging everyones "what are your favorite" posts) the website is broken up into basically 30 percent"What movie is this?" and 40 percent "What is your Favorite (or least favorite)______" and 30 percent editorial.

How does one rate a movie?

It all depends on the tastes of the viewer. Monsoon mentioned Starship Troopers, in my opinion a freakin fantastic movie. My girlfriend said that it was one of the few movies that she walked out on. Things like that I don't know how to respond with, I have walked out on 2 movies in my entire life. Fantasia (Zzzzzz) and U2 rattle and hum (the first movie that I knowingly as a 14 year old walked out of).

Do you rate movies based on their genre or based on the whole movie realm? I thought platoon was a great movie, but in the war genre it is far surpassed by so many others. Just one of the guys is a great movie, but in the realm of teen movies most of the John Hughes movies are much better (or maybe not).

Maybe it's more than that. Music, acting, FX, or maybe its just the concept of something that no one has ever done before. The great movies are the first of their kind usually. They are the movies that you always remember for being the trend setter. The Kentucky fried movie, Halloween, Star Wars, Rocky, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Towering Inferno, Sixteen Candles, these are just some of the movie that left an impression on me because they were things that had the right combination that made them a great movie. Even the Blair Witch Project. These kids were geniuses. Make a whole movie from a video camera almost.

I have seen more than my fair share of movies. How do I rate them, by the easiest way possible. Do I really want to sit through them again and again after I see them the first time. The more I have seen them (usually) the stronger I feel about the movie.

Thats it right there. I buy movies I like and know Ill watch over and over. Theres been a ton of great movies that did horrible at the BO and didnt get any recognition by the awards. But you like em, buy em, watch em because they touch something inside you.
Im a huge John Wayne western fan and can watch em over and over and over ad nauseum.
Payback with Mel Gibson I swear to god I 1st seen it on one of the movie stations it would go off on the East channel and come on on the West channel and Id watch it again or Id come home and it would be on Id watch it again.I swear I drove my wife nuts that month it was on.
All of us can name movies like that and movies we've bought for that very reason. We could care less about all the things that make a supposed great movie, it touches us in a way we can't explain. It just ends up being one of those times where we say "I just like it,thats all." and thats all the reason we need. -
