I feel very fortunate,I think I hit the 1980's at absolutely the best time to experience it,I turned 20 in 1980.You should have been 24 in 1984!You young people who were too young to have been there first hand but love the '80's, I wish I had a time machine for you,yes, you would have loved it.

Well I agree. I was 15 in 1980, and could do some of the teenage stuff that the eighties was all about - then got into work and relationships, ending in marriage at the end of the decade. I really think that whilst I'd love to be 21 again, I'd really love to be 21 again in the eighties!

That depends on how you look at it. I feel fortunate for being ten years younger than you.
I experienced one half as a kid an the other half as a teenager. If you were 20 years old in 1980, this actually makes you a child of the 70’s… I can imagine though, you liked the 1980’s more, like most of us do, but no matter how you look at it, your childhood was already over when the 1980’s begun. Watching cartoons as an adult is a total different experience than watching it as a child. I was about the same age as the characters of most teen movies back in the eighties,which was wonderful, because I could identify myself perfectly with the actors of the movies. That made it even more fantastic. We must not forget that along with music,television and movies were a big part of what made the eighties so great…
Nevertheless, I think the 80’s were a cool decade for everyone between 5 and 30 years old at the time. I also find it absolutely fantastic that some people,who weren’t even born in the eighties appreciate that decade so much!
Yeah right, bring on that time machine!

I think I was the right age to be a child of the 80s, I was 6 at the beginning of 1980 and left school in 1990, but I still remember a little of the 70s. I watched Meatballs (1979) the other day and that sure brought back memories regarding the clothes!
As a result of growing up in the 80s I've been having great fun collecting films, cartoons ( http://linux.tc3net.com/darwin/kult/ -needs updating, got more to add) and electronic toys from the 80s ( http://62.188.32.182:1453/~rid/handheld.html ). Car boot sales are wonderful places except it's becomming more and more difficult to find 'new' old things

Just like you Wizard, I remember quite a bit of the late 70's too. I can't think of any movie right now, but I sure recall some cool television series like:
-The Six Million Dollar Man -The Incredible Hulk -Starsky & Hutch -Buck Rogers In The 25th Century -The Man From Atlantis and so on,...
The more I dig into that memory of mine it seems that, even as a kid a spend an awful lot of time before the television set...

too bad i was born in 83 i missed so many good things... but, most of the 80's stuff (movies, series, etc...) came to Germany a bit later, so i still got to see some cool stuff! And i can still buy most movies on DVD (yeah, e-bay rules!)

Actually, this makes Kline84 a child in the seventies, not necessarily a child of the seventies.
Different people got different things from the decade. I spanned this from the ages of 15 to 25, and so saw both sides. And let me tell you, there were far more things going on than cartoons and pop videos. Things that as a kid I just couldn't or wouldn't really understand.
I remember going to clubs and seeing great, great bands on their debut performances. I recall seeing the movies that you probably only know from TV or video up there on the big screen, when you really didn't know what was going to happen. And I experienced first hand the business culture of the time, trying to succeed when success and failure were only a haris-breadth apart.
I'm sure that as everyone eventually grows older, there are more and more aspects of the eighties that we appreciate - so here's a question for you all: Knowing what you know NOW about the eighties, what do you reckon would have been a great age to be in 1985?Posts: 3646 | From: Shermer, IL - where else? | Registered: Mar 2001 | Site Updates: 37

I have no idea what it was like to be 20 in 1980 or 1985, so indeed I can’t be the judge of that. I can only speak for myself who started the 1980’s at the age of ten. Looking back those were the best ‘carefree’ years of my life:
Back then I had the best friends ever. I was not too old to make a complete fool of myself while trying to skate or break dance. I never noticed much of the economic crisis that was going on then. Neither did I realise how serious the nuclear threat was between the US and Russia. However I do remember vinyl, Rubik cube, Pac-Man, … I spend my Saturday mornings watching cartoons and music video’s. I saw most movies released after 1982 on the big screen or on video. From 1986 on, Saturday evening meant party time. By the end of 1989 I met my wife, so the 80’s even had a happy ending for me.
I was nice to become 12,16 and 18 in one decade, but to claim that this would be the perfect age to span the 1980’s would be an overstatement. For me the 80’s were all about having fun without any responsibilities. I was too young to think about the more serious things that were going on at the time. That’s what makes it so special to me.
I’m just glad I had my share of it.
