Gokseong aka The Wailing (2016)

Started this year with a bang. The Wailing is from South Korea and what you get is 2,5 hours of very unsettling atmosphere, some folk horror, zombies, epidemic, ghosts, exorcism and whatnot. You never quite know whatīs around the corner plus you get to see beautiful rural mountain scenery and lots of rain. Highly recommended! 9/10

 -

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

This was fun haunted house classic directed by William Castle. Vincent Price is great once again and thereīs comedic elements but few pretty nice eerie moments too. 74 minutes well spent. 6/10

 -

Rawhead Rex (1986)

Cool 80s British horror feature based on Clive Barker short story. I remember renting the tape back in the day so it was about time to revisit this film from Arrow bluray. Fun low budget monster madness. 6/10

Behind Locked Doors (a.k.a. Any Body.. Any Way, 1968)

Exploitation quikie in which our two no-name-actress heroines visit a countryside swingersparty (apparently being held in a barn),
where one of our girls falls prey to a attempted rape before being "rescued" by a mysterious birdwatcher (read : peeping tom).
Once they try to leave and head back to the city, they discover their car has been sabotaged, so they venture out into the
wilderness in search of gas or a phone. They end up in this decripit old house owned by -surprise- the mysterious birdwatcher
who lives their with his sister who insist they stay for the night. They soon realize they're being held prisoner, and before
long they're subjected to psycho-sexual experiments by the birdwatcher, who turns out to be an ex mortician..

Behind Locked Doors was picked up by exploitation mogul Harry Novak's Boxoffice International for distribution, and probably played
at some regional drive-ins during the late 60s / early 70s. Decades later it turned up as the bottom half of one of many double-feature
dvds released by Something Weird Video in the early 2000s. The film itself is fairly unspectaculair, although it does show some peculiar
similarities with Pete Walker's House Of Whipcord (1974).

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Rewatched this remake directed by William Malone and this is a pretty poor film. Geoffrey Rush and Famke Jansen star and then you got second tier actors like Taye Diggs, Ali Larter and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. Stupid characters talking stupid dialogue and wandering around cellar corridors. Avoid. 3/10.

 -

The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

This was also a rewatch and while i enjoy the first half of this film the second part always leaves me somewhat cold. The three main ladies are fine but i bet no one can argue that Jack Nicholson steals the show. Havenīt read the John Updike book, is it better? 6/10

 -

November (2017)

Now this was a marvelous surprise. November is Estonian film set in 19th century and what you get is love triangle, witches, demons, mythological Kratt creatures, black death, great b/w cinematography, unique characters and cool cast. Recommended! 8/10

Slime City (1988)

Ambitious DIY splatter flick about a student who moves into a rundown apartment building in New York City, and falls prey to the ghost of
an occultist / alchemist and his followers who still reside the building. Apparently they have set their sights to the body of a new victim which
they need for their leader's return, but not before the hapless new tennant turns into a gooey murderous monster killing a local bum, a prostitute,
and some of the least threatening looking NYC street punks you could possibly imagine. Once his cute girlfriend finds out what's been happening
after the disappearance of their best friend, she must do battle with her now fully transformed boyfriend and save the day..

Shot in 1986, but released theatrically in 1988, Slime City became a minor hit in the Midnight Movie circuit before it hit video in 1989. Director
Gregory Lamberson was a former classmate of Jim Muro (director of Street Trash, 1987), who is credited as a steadicam operator on Slime City.

It wasn't until the end-credits rolled that i realized the cute blonde girlfriend and the darkhaired succubus nextdoor neighbour are played by the
same actress. While the acting leaves a lot to be desired, it is the splatter that matters, and the climactic fight becomes quite the spectacle when
the girl hacks her boyfriend to bits while continuously being attacked by his dismembered body.

Slime City most likely will appeal to fans of Frank Henenlotter's films and the likes of Combat Shock and the aforementioned Street Trash.

Not quite on the same level as those other titles, but it gives an idea of what to expect from Slime City. I forgot to mention
there's also a belated sequel, Slime City Massacre (2009), by the same director, and co-starring the same guy who played
the lead in the original. Not sure if it's worth checking out though.

By the way, shouldn't we check on Helen ? I suspect she may be stuck under a pile of Halloween decorations. [Big Grin]

Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)

Mostly more of the same but now everyone wants demon Baphomet artefact which is in the Hill House and has caused all the problems. Some gore and nudity in this one which is nice so itīs slightly better than the 1999 film. 4/10

 -

Terrifier (2016)

Damien Leoneīs pet project and this first movie was a simple murderfest with zero plot but that doesnīt mean itīs a bad movie. Itīs very nasty and you just gotta love the old school practical effects. Jenna Kanell was cute too. 6/10

 -

Yûrei yashiki no kyôfu: Chi wo sû ningyô aka The Vampire Doll (1970)

This is a Japanese movie and if you love films based on Edgar Allan Poe stories or Hammer stuff, i bet youīll also enjoy this one. Some spooky moments. 6/10

Terrifier 2 (2022)

The sequel improves in every department and damn that bedroom sequence was sick [Cool] Good and nasty stuff. 7/10

 -

Noroi no yakata: Chi o suu me aka aka Lake of Dracula (1971)

Second film from Arrow Videoīs The Bloodthirsty Trilogy box set. A vampire haunts young lady but thereīs very little action in this one and itīs not even that atmospheric. Good for a quick watch though. 5/10

 -

Scalps (1983)

A very low budget slasher directed by Fred Olen Ray. Six teens, a station wagon and a tent was the name of the game and that is what you get, plus few kills. Still, Scalps can be quite charming in itīs own peculiar way. 5/10

Evil of Dracula (1974)

The third and the last movie from The Bloodthirsty Trilogy box and this was a good one. The story takes place at a girlschool and the headmaster is a vampire so no wonder itīs entertaining stuff [Smile] I would give this 7/10

 -

Faust (2000)

This was a surprisingly good film based on a comic book and directed by Brian Yuzna. I have few of the Faust: Love of the Damned comic books and itīs very extreme stuff so i have to give credit for the moviemakers here because they at least try to follow the same path. 7/10

 -

Spider Baby, or The Maddest Story Ever Told (1964/67)

This is a cult film directed by Jack Hill and i liked it. Very good acting here, especially Lon Chaney Jr. and Jill Banner shine. Carol Ohmart was once again very sexy and i also enjoyed the entertaining making of documentary. 6/10

Wrong Turn (2021)

Iīve seen all the original Wrong Turn films which are not that good so what does this remake/reboot have on offer? I totally hated the first 45 minutes with stupid characters and extremely basic plot but after that the movie takes itīs own path. Overall though, this is not a very good movie and IMO they should end this franchise. 5/10

 -

Donīt Go in the House (1979)

This movie has an interesting start and we get to see one ultra nasty flamethrower kill. After that scene i was ready for anything but the movie changes from exploitation to psychological thriller which is not a bad move but maybe the second part is a bit too tame. Solid stuff 6/10

 -

Saw X (2023)

Latest Saw film and yes, iīve seen them all. I loved the first 30 mins which is more like drama but after that we once again go to some old factory and Jigsaw starts his games. Same old same old and this is another franchise i could live without. 5/10

Re-Animator (1985)

Rewatch and what a great classic it is. Many legendary genre names started or blossomed here and Jeffrey Combs was born to play Herbert West. 9/10

 -

The Mole People (1956)

This was pretty fun adventure sci-fi horror fantasy film with a rather basic plot but itīs never boring. And OMG what the producers were thinking with that ending. 6/10
SPOILER! "In the original ending, Dr. Bentley and Adad lived happily ever after. The studio, reluctant to imply an interracial relationship, insisted on a new ending two weeks after filming ended."

 -

Bride of Re-Animator (1990)

Not a bad sequel at all, in fact itīs surprisingly good. Brian Yuzna took the directors seat from Stuart Gordon and did a fine job. Some wicked sfx and itīs all mayhem in the end once again [Smile] 7/10

INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND (2018)

 -

Saw the first half of this one at a friend's house awhile back and decided to go ahead and finish it. It's pretty darn good. A pretty f**ked up story; but still a good solid horror/drama movie with some good acting. Recommended if you haven't seen and have a strong mentality.

Christine . pretty good 80s flick.

Atomik mentioned Terrifier. We watched it the other night. I thought the clown was creepy and some scenes i was not expecting those outcomes. Although it had some predictable moments . I liked it alright. Have not scene Terrifier 2 but i believe its available on my smarttv. Will try to check it out.

3 On A Meathook (1972)

Second directorial feature from William Girdler (after Asylum of Satan which came out earlier that same year) is a skid-row exploitation film
loosely based on the crimes of Ed Gein, but actually does succeed in creating some tension and mystery, and gadually goes from horror to
social drama before its rather rushed twist ending.

Midway through, there's a bar scene (most likely a real location, no soundstage) in which a band, American Xpress, is playing some quality
psychedelic funk. Girdler must have noticed they were actually quite good as he takes time to film the band who are performing two songs.

Girdler's career lasted only 6 years, in which he directed 9 films, before he died tragically at age 30 in a helicopter crash in january 1978.

To my knowledge, 3 On A Meathook has never been released on any digital format, but would make an ideal contender for full restoration
to be included in a possible future installment of Arrow's American Horror Project series of box-sets, i would love to see that happen.

I see that Incident in a Ghostland stars Canadian-French pop star Mylene Farmer so that alone makes the movie interesting. Just check out the song Libertine from YouTube in case you donīt know the artist.

Christine is a classic in my books and I would like to see 3 on a Meathook someday.

Shock Waves (1977)

Sympathetic lowbudget horror film featuring nazi zombies and directed by Ken Wiederhorn (King Frat, Meatballs II). Thereīs just too much meaningless wandering and the kills are pretty lame. See Peter Cushing and John Carradine in supporting roles. 5/10

 -

Beyond Re-Animator (2003)

Beyond is one of those films Brian Yuzna made in Spain but overall itīs not that bad sequel. In fact i quite enjoyed both Re-Animator sequels. Some crazy scenes in this one and Chris Hemsworthīs wife Elsa Pataky looks stunning. 6/10

 -

Schock aka Shock (1977)

Mario Bavaīs last film and itīs a pretty damn good psychological horror story with a ghost twist. Few marvelous scenes in this one (they stole one trick for Annabelle) and Daria Nicolodi did a wonderful job in the lead role. I also enjoyed the music from the band Libra. They released Shock with the name Beyond the Door II in the US but this has nothing to do with the cool 1974 Ovidio G. Assonitis film except that it features same kid, David Colin Jr. Recommended! 8/10

The Crawlers (a.k.a. Contamination .7 a.k.a. Troll 3, 1991)

Nuclear waste from a powerplant gets dumped in the forest and causes the trees to grow carnivorous killer roots. (yes, really !)

Silly, Italian film shot on location in the US by infamous Joe D'Amato's Filmirage production company, and directed by Fabrizio Laurenti
(credited as Martin Newlin), the same guy who did Witchery (1988) with David Hasselhoff and Linda Blair. (whether that is any kind of
recommendation is up to you to decide)

Some of the crew of Troll 2 (1990), which was shot on the same location, went on to work on this film, including miss Black Emanuelle
herself, Laura Gemser, credited here as costume designer, and that's how this ended up being retitled as Troll 3 in some territories.

For fans of bad movies it's still rather enjoyable i guess, but the glory days of Italian horror were long gone by the time this came out.

Lurking Fear (1994)

More Lovecraft/Jeffrey Combs stuff but this was a pretty bad Full Moon Entertainment film. Lame directing and poor story & dialog. 3/10

 -

Gatti rossi in un labirinto di vetro aka Eyeball (1975)

Enjoyed this Italian whodunit giallo very much. Eyeball was directed by Umberto Lenzi and the movie was shot in Spain. Fun characters, few kills and some nudity to spice it up. 7/10

 -

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)

Rewatched Elvira and itīs still a fun comedy with some horror elements. Cassandra Peterson is smoking hot and i like the whole cast in this one. The Arrow release includes cool 90 minutes documentary. 7/10

Some other stuff i watched or rewatched this past week or so :

Dance of The Dead (2008)

Going by the rave reviews i expected this to be.. well, better. It's a rather silly teen comedy / zombie horror film,
and apparently they ran out of budget before the power plant finale could be filmed. At the end we hear our
heroes say they must stop this power plant (the cause of the zombie outbreak) once and for all, and then they're
off to do so (presumably), but we never get to see it. The character of the graveyard caretaker seems inspired by
Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett in Dellamorte Dellamore, 1994), but his scenes serve no real purpose and
could have easily been omitted. Nevertheless, it has an enthusiastic cast of youngsters and some fun dialogue.

Dawn of The Dead (2004)

Zack Snyder's directorial debut, and remake of the George Romero classic starts strong with an intense pre-credits
opening scene, but never reaches the same level of intensity for the rest of the film. Much of the bigger scenes
later on seem to be constructed if it were an action film. It's unfair to keep comparing it to the much-loved original.
It's not a bad film, not at all, but for some reason i didn't enjoy this as much as i did when it came out 20 years ago.

Midnight Movie Massacre (a.k.a. Attack From Mars, 1988)

Abysmal, supposed-to-be homage to sci-fi monster movies of the atom age about an alien invading a movie theater
in 1956 where a diverse group of stereotypes are watching Space Patrol. We actually get to see the movie they're
watching onscreen interspersed with scenes of the tentacled alien monster killing some of the theater's patrons and
employees. The few shots of the monster are decent and there is an army of dancing robots (don't ask) , but overall
this is really, really bad.. so bad it almost goes straight into surreal territory, but not in a good way.

The Gate (1987)

Extremely likable 80s fan favorite may not be among the very best the decade had to offer, but it certainly does come
close. Suburban setting similar to Poltergeist, inventive special effects, a cast of actual younsters (just as in that other
fan favorite from the same year, The Monster Squad), and some pretty intense scenes for its PG-13 rating. Great fun !

The Beyond (1981)

Lucio Fulci's phantasmagorical descent into otherworldly supernatural horror is as good as ever. I love how the laws of
nature, the boundaries of logic, and the restrictions of reality gradually start to break down while our heroes (Catriona
MacColl and David Warbeck) head for their inevitable fate from which there is no going back. Supreme make-up and
gore effects, and another quality musical score from Fabio Frizzi help disguise the film's meager budget of $400.000.

Happy Halloween everyone !

Cellar Dweller (1987)

Fun little Full Moon Pictures creature feature. Debrah Farentino stars and Jeffrey Combs is on screen during the first 8 minutes. This was from the Arrow Video Enter the Video Store - Empire of Screams box set 6/10

 -

Poltergeist (1982)

Poltergeist 4K release rewatch and i still enjoy this movie very much. Spielberg magic. 8/10

 -

From Beyond (1986)

Another 4K rewatch and From Beyond stars surprise, surprise Jeffrey Combs. This is another film i have always enjoyed watching. 8/10

 -

Hack-O-Lantern (1988)

This was superfun lowbudget halloween cheese directed by Jag Mundhra. Satan worship, heavy metal, lots of nudity, few kills and one crazy family. 6/10
