I just recently watched "The Three Amigos" for the first time. I remember when this came out in '86, but IIRC it got somewhat panned by critics. And, for whatever reason, I just never checked it out before now.
I did find the film mildly amusing/entertaining - however, as a whole, the film wasn't extremely funny - especially given that it starred Chevy Chase & Steve Martin - who were in their comedic prime back in the '80's. I was definitely expecting more out of a film with these guys, given the other hilarious film they starred in during this same era.
Though, there were some funny lines:
When two of the women were discussing the three Amigos:
Juanita: Which one do you like? Carmen: I like the one that's not so smart. Juanita: Which one is that?
LOL!
The cinematography/scenery/costumes were first-rate; this was especially impressive on the Blu-ray I watched.
I especially liked the scenes when the Amigos were riding off into the dusk; the purple sky & desert here were very impressive (though it may have been a film set).

I think that everyone felt a twinge of disappointment with the comedy talent involved that The Three Amigos wasn't funnier and only mildly amusing. Of course, as a John Landis movie of the 80s, it has a spectacular look to it. Most comedies look kind of flat and bland, but Landis's always look great even if they don't work. (Even The Stupids. LOL) I might be d**ning it with faint praise, but I do like it better than Spies Like Us.

That was a funny moment Nostalgia but this film just stunk like a Terd which you would think I would enjoy but not when it comes to movies. With 3 guys like that starring in a comedy flick, I guess a person cant help but have high expectations. Perhaps it would have faired better with some lesser known talent at the time. Maybe a Charlie Sheen/Steven Wright/Jim Carrey trio. I know Wright had been around for awhile but he wasn't a huge name like the originals cast in the movie itself.
Does anybody else agree with me about the trio being too big for the part?

I'd have to agree with this. Martin, Chase, and Short were somewhat wasted in the film. Going into this, I was expecting something extremely funny. However, this was a "historical" comedy, and as such was limited by the subject matter. Possibly lesser comedic actors would have been more appropriate for the role(s) here.
I do agree the film looks great - very impressive scenery, locale, and incredible costumes.

I liked Three Amigos when I was younger, but yes, the movie has not aged well at all. Especially after watching better & funnier Martin/Chase/Short films that they all did individually. Well, except for Martin Short. I never found any of his movies funny.

Reasonable enough, although, as others have noted, it didn't quite reach its full potential. Overall, the parts are greater than the sum, as while the overall picture sags in parts, some of the scenes are indeed gold (Steve's prolonged attempt to get his colleague's attention while trying to break into the studio, Chevy's recklessness with his firearm at the Singing Bush ("He's invisible; how was I supposed to know he was there!?" "You were supposed to fire up; WE BOTH FIRED UP!!!!"), and Steve agonizing odyssey to get his cell's keys being good examples of moments that do work well.

There were definitely some hilarious sequences in the film - but, they were few & far between. Overall, for various reasons the film didn't quite "gel" the way it should have.
This is probably one of the many reasons I didn't check the film out before last week. I just hadn't heard anything good about this - plus, the storyline just didn't seem that interesting to me.

Here´s my thoughts after rewatch last year:
Just watched Three Amigos (1986). Last time i watched it was back in the 80s and i was afraid if i´d like it at all. Well, it was better than i thought but let´s face it, it´s Landis´ worst 80s film.
The Amigos Martin, Chase & Short plus the villains Arau and Plana are all good and have few great moments but i just didn´t laugh enough. I also liked all three Randy Newman musical numbers but the movie is just too "nice". For once i can say that Ebert said it best "The ideas to make Three Amigos into a good comedy are here, but the madness is missing". I know that Landis had the final cut but the studio still removed few scenes. Also, they had the idea already in the early 80s and originally Martin, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were going to play the Three Amigos. Now that would have been madness

I almost completely agree with you, except that I think that Spies Like Us in Landis's worst 80s film, but only by a slight margin I think that that one has even fewer laughs. But The Three Amigos does have its fans and little cult.
Boy, that cast of Martin, Aykroyd, and Belushi would have been something!

There's so much Belushi could have had if fate had been kinder; besides this and likely immortality as Peter Venkman, Spies Like Us and Armed and Dangerous are just a few projects originally set to feature him, and while those are reasonably good, one can only imagine what he'd have brought to them.
