That'd be Sean Connery then, I guess...

I guess "Englishman" covers Scotland, Ireland and England in a lot of people's minds. Hell, Lazenby as an Aussie pulled it off. So I guess it means anyone speaking English... except for Americans

quote:Yes, all these are true. Also, Burt Reynolds was offered the role when they panicked in 1970 being without a Bond after Lazenby dropped out. Though to Reynold's credit he declined, stating an englishman should play the part. Broccoli and co. were still in panic mode and hired American actor John Gavin, but in the 11th hour, Connery came back for a cool million, and John Gavin was paid in full to step aside.
Another great 'what if?'. I think Reynolds deffo made the right choice, both for Bond and his career.

Cool... not expecting much from either, but I do love practical fx, which is the saving grace of many low budget 80's and early 90's horror films.

The Curse is decent enough, and plays out like some sort of Invaders From Mars / I Drink Your Blood hybrid. The movie looks great though, especially in its recent HD version. It's still a mystery how Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci ended up as associate producer on this one (although rumours persist he had nothing to do with it).

Never seen The Runestone but have seen the Curse quite some years back which if I remember right I thought was fairly decent, also seen the crazy in name only sequel The Curse 2 - The Bite which I was not too struck on!
What about these two drama's Billy Bathgate (1991) and Blaze (1989)
Watched Billy Bathgate when it first came out but have very little recollection of what it was like, never seen Blaze before. Has anyone got any opinions on these two which are paired up on a cheap double feature Blu Ray from Mill Creek.
Worth a watch?

Both worth seeing I think. The 90's were the era of the gangster/mobster/mafia films, and while I think BB is worth a watch, compared to Bugsy, Goodfellas, Casino, Donnie Brasco etc. it kinda pales. I believe Blaze is from Ron Shelton (Bull Durham/White Men Can't Jump) and plays like a long version of Burt Reynold's weirdo politician character from Striptease... that is the best way I can decribe it

I have never seen, nor do I desire to see, Billy Bathgate. Dustin Hoffman as a gangster?! No way. He is a little puny nebbish. I see Loren Dean hasn't done any tv or movies for the past 5 years. I do remember him in another tv show cancelled too soon, Terriers.

Hoffman is not as bad as one might think, playing notorious Jewish gangster, Dutch Schultz. But I've seen better incarnations, such as Tim Roth in Hoodlum.

Tim Roth is one of those actors who can make anything better. He's great.

Yeah it's got a good cast Atomik as along with Oldman and Bacon you also have Joe Don Baker and Karen Young (Burt Reynolds "Heat") just that despite the odd bit now coming back to me it doesn't seem to be the least bit memorable unless it's because there's so many of these types of thrillers with more or less identical plot lines that it's just got lost amongst the bunch!

There's not much love for Criminal Law--and it is far from a perfect film--but I like it. Besides the great cast which was already been mentioned, I think that it was Gary Oldman's first time doing an American accent. He's excellent, as you'd expect. It was also the first time likeable Kevin Bacon played a villain, and he's chillingly good as a serial killer. It has an interesting plot. Defense attorney Oldman gets Bacon acquitted of murder and then realizes that he really is a serial killer and decides to represent him again to stop him at all costs. There are a lot of head-scratching moments and holes in the screenplay--and it looks like there was some post-production tinkering--but I don't think that it's bad at all. Even when it's slow or contrived, the acting is very watchable. I think that it's a forgotten little B-film, with A-list talent.

I hope that you like it. I think that Oldman and Bacon are always worth watching even if the material isn't quite up to their standards.

Here's another I'm in two minds about picking up though I love Ami Dolenz and I'd imagine it would be quite good fun and that is the 1992 comedy Miracle Beach.
Anyone know if this is worth a watch?
