yeah, basically all Paul Verhoeven films have been available here at any time on any format including regular television screenings ever since the 80's, especially Turks Fruit (Turkish Delights) and Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange). Both Spetters (1980) as well as The Fourth Man seem to be somewhat less popular when compared to the earlier ones, possibly because of the controversial subject matter regarding Spetters, and the very dark humour of The Fourth Man. Definitely not for all tastes, that's for sure ! The Fourth Man actually has much more in common with the Italian murder mysteries of the 70's. Early on, there's a dream sequence which is almost an exact copy of a scene from Mario Bava's Kill Baby Kill (1966). (you'll recognize it when you see it.. i'm sure). Anyway, it's extremely stylized, very atmospheric, sexy, gruesome and morbidly funny. Throw in some blasphemy, bi-sexuality and serious splatter, and even the uncut version of Basic Instinct seems restrained when compared to The Fourth Man !
Enjoy !

"The Fourth Man" is my favorite Verhoeven film after "Robocop." What JRiR says is spot on. You'll love it. I like "Spetters" too, but it's more of a traditional narrative film compared to the crazy "The Fourth Man."

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm very curious. It's based on a book by Gerard Reve, a very flamboyant and controversial Dutch writer. For example: he had to stand trial for blasphemy once because, in a book of his, he described how he has sex with God, incarnated as a donkey! The combination of the views of Reve and Verhoeven can only be unique. Verhoeven said he was influenced by the relationship between dreams, psychology and religion in Bergman's work, the surrealism of Buñuel and Hitchcock's suspense.

In The Fourth Man, Jeroen Krabbé plays the part of Gerard Reve. I forgot to mention that in my first response.

Watched Fourth Man yesterday and it was weird, funny and fantastic. Verhoeven broke some taboos again but i´m used to that in his movies
Jeroen Krabbé was great in the leading role and it was nice to see Renée Soutendijk (Spetters) and Dolf de Vries (Turkish Delight, Soldier of Orange, Black Book) too.
I also liked the score, composed by Loek Dikker and cool cinematography by Jan de Bont.
