Which of the 4 Treks released in the decade would you consider the best? It's a VERY close call between II and IV for me, but I'd give a slight edge to the former, with its strong story with genuine edginess (I think the fact Khan and Kirk never do actually come physically face to face makes the former seem more omnipotently threatening), terrific villain (getting ever scarier as his marbles slowly vanish throughout the picture one at a time), great performances from the cast, who clearly have a strong rapport with each other, and a good message about accepting growing old and that life can come out of death if we look close enough (the irony is Leonard Nemoy initially only signed on for this with the agreement Spock would be irrevocably killed, but found he had so much fun doing it again that he requested they find away to bring him back).

the first four are all solid in my opinion but if i had to pick i would say search for spock, i liked christopher lloyd's villain Kruege, was a better bad guy, they had a better final battle in the midst of genesis destroying itself, plus kirk outsmarting his opponents was great.
visually speaking i thought the first movie was awesome, it had alot of great scenes especially the one with spock on vulcan

Please don't tell my girlfriend, but I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek tv series as a kid. It was on after school and I'd actually take a break from playing Nerf football with friends to watch it. Might have been my first revelation that I liked girls even if most of them were of the alien variety. Not quite the 'uniquely awesome' girl I was searching for later in life.. but James T. Kirk is still a legend in my mind.
As far as the Star Trek movies from the 80's.. I have a soft spot for "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" because two of my fav episodes from the original tv series were when they traveled back in time to visit earth.
I still rank the episode "The City On The Edge of Forever" with Joan Collins where Kirk and Spock follow a deranged McCoy through a time portal back to 1930's earth as my fav episode from the original series still to this day.
But with that said.. the best Star Trek film ever made is "Tourista: The Wrath of Jonna Lee".. wait I messed that up.. sorry that was leftover "Making The Grade" discussion.
The best Star Trek movie is "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in my opinion. It was a brilliant film that stands on its own, but for original Star Trek fans it was a beautiful link to the tv series and an episode called "Space Seed" with Ricardo Montalban who played Khan in both the movie and the original episode.
So my vote goes to "The Wrath"

I just bought the dvd´s and need to watch the movies again. But i remember liking The Voyage Home very much.

Spanning the entire series, not just the decade, all the even ones--II, IV, and VI--are great, the others okay to good. "Wrath of Khan" is my favorite.

The original 60s' series is the best: 'The Enemy Within' being perhaps the finest 50 minutes of television ever broadcast.
From the 80's I'd have to fess up and say 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier'. Yes, its absurd and technically the worst of the original cast films. But I saw it as a kid, and was genuinely taken in by the epic story to find God and the gentle camaraderie between Kirk, Spock and Bones. The fact that William Shatner almost managed to "touch the face of God" was a brilliant in-joke for fans of Bill's spoken word classic 'The Transformed Man'.
And although its 1979, but I liked The Motion Picture (Star Trek 1) a lot, too.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan. I was not a big trekkie (more of a Star Wars fan), but always loved part 2...a slug in the ear, the presumed death of a legend, the dude from Fantasy Island....ahhhhh....good times!
I rarely watched the original series as a kid, but now I'd like to go back and watch....starting from the beginning. * I've never even seen one episode of the Next Generation....
FYI - If the new Star Trek movie released a few years back counts....that my tops for sure....I freakin' love that movie!

I watched "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" today .. like Burnett mentioned .. it is rather funny at times. You can just tell how much fun the cast had making it.
It was a treat to see San Francisco in 1986 .. and the movie gave me an idea of how awkward I would feel going back in time now. No cell phone, fancy computer, or GPS with information at my finger tips to guide me.
Thinking about breaking out my Blu-ray that contains season 1 of the original tv series that I got awhile back.
Can you believe it has been 45 years since the original tv series first aired and 25 years since Star Trek IV was released? Wow!

Trek movies tend to follow a simple pattern : Odd Numbers Bad, Even Numbers Good...
ST: The Motion Picture - too pastel, nothing much happens, and the threat of global annihilation doesn't ever actually feel real. Oh - and someone needed to tell Kirk that it didn't matter that the transporters on the ship weren't working - as long as the ones on earth were OK. You only need ONE transporter unit. But then they wouldn't have been able to do the big Enterprise fly-by, would they?
ST2: The Wrath Of Khan - ditched the pastel shades for vivid colors and the dull storyline for one with action and real threat. Only issue I have is that the whole plot revolves around Khan recognising Chekov from Space Seed - but Chekov wasn't on the Enterprise in Space Seed - he didn't join until Season 2.
ST3: The Search for Spock. One word - pointless. Everything in the movie is reprised in about a minute during ST4, and the rest (Kirk's son, the planet exploding, etc) didn't really add anything.
ST4: The Voyage Home. Fun all the way, but not really action packed at all. It's played for laughs and succeeds, and I enjoy it, but not a favorite.
ST5: The Final Frontier. For me, the worst Trek Movie of them all. Full of contradictions, characterisation flaws and meaningless psycho-spiritual drivel. This one I don't watch if it's on.
ST6: The Undiscovered Country. Back to top form for the last TOS cast movie. This one has everything that 3 and 5 lack - a strong plot, good characterisation, excellent acting and action scenes, and a strong message.
ST7: Generations. I have a soft spot for this one, but it's a weaker effort than most. It works OK as a link movie between the old and new casts, and as such is OK and one I own - but the plot is a little contrived in places and it's sad to see the demise of NCC1701-D.
ST8: First Contact. The best, most action packed, and tense movie for me. The Borg are nasty, and the Borg Queen especially so.
ST9: Insurrection. I personally liked this one, as it felt like a new TNG episode. However, it wasn't the strongest plot.
ST10: Nemesis. They tried to go all dark again, and somehow they missed the mark, despite having all the right ingredients. Maybe Trekkies would rather see Spock die than Data.....
ST11 - The new cast and back-story were enjoyable, but it'll take a little while to get used to the new people playing familiar roles. Of the new actors, Karl Urban was by far the best as Bones.

Yesterday marked the 45th anniversary of the air date of the original tv series.
But what about the infamous Captain Pike pilot? It didn't aired in advance of the Kirk lead series right? But I do know they used the footage from the pilot in the two-part "The Menagerie" episodes instead.

"The Cage" was shot in 1964, and was initially rejected as a pilot show. However, a second pilot was commisioned after executives at Desilu expressed interest in the concept (just not the initial show).
Gene Roddenberry spoke with Jeffrey Hunter (the original Captain Pike) and got his agreement to re-cut the film so that "The Menagerie" was created.
The original pilot wasn't acvtually shown on tv in it's initial format until 1988.

Paul .. I remember seeing the pilot on late night tv and it might have been the 80's. I was in shock for most of it trying to figure out why Jeffrey Hunter was the Captain.
I might have said it above .. but for fans of the original series .. I high recommend the recent Blu-ray release .. they did an amazing job of remastering it.

While certainly Chekhov wasn't serving in his usual capacity on the Enterprise during its first encounter with Khan on the original series, to attempt to rationalize the admitted plot hole mentioned above (likely a simple oversight by the writers), it wouldn't be out of the question that perhaps he was on board at the time serving in some other capacity, and Khan at some point off camera had an encounter with him; I think some fans have put it down that he was among the crew members that helped set up Khan's brigade on Ceti Alpha V; not sure exactly what percent canonical this can be considered, though.

In a series like Star Trek, where canon is so important to the continuity over so many episodes / incarnations, in my opinion it's wrong to gloss over inconsistencies like this by saying 'they might have met off-screen'. Khan could have had a sex change and married a Klingon off screen, but nobody would have bought it if instead of Ricardo Montalban, the movie had Sharon Stone holding hands with Kahless.
In this instance, they retrospectively tried to update previous canon after the error was discovered, by suggesting that he would have been around on the ship somewhere, but it's all treated as a joke (Walter Koenig said Khan met him when he took too long in the bathroom that Khan wanted to use.... ) so it's clearly an error.
The movie's great, but they did make a mistake with continuity there.

Watched Star Trek movies 1-5 while the site was down. Well, i liked them all but I and IV the most.
The Motion Picture is so mysterious. Yes, it´s very slow but i don´t mind. I own the remastered versions and they had upgraded the special effects beautifully. Usually i hate when they do that but this movie looks fantastic!
The Voyage Home was superfun and i loved see the crew in 80s San Francisco plus most of the jokes were good.
I need to get The Undiscovered Country dvd too.
Never seen any Next Generation stuff.
