My top 20 makes me an individual (thats what the 80s were all about - freedom of expression) and means my favourite are personal to me like yours are to you. The psychology behind choosing your top 20 may or may not be the same as everyone elses, why you chose certain films over others, why they made the top spot or didnt make it at all. Unfortuanately we cant sit in a coffee house for hours listening to each others reasons, for geographical reasons...but i can switch the kettle on here and read what you think. . .reading what others think is a lot better than telling everyone what you think so please have your say so we can all read.

I ummed and arrrd for ages what to do and finally decided to use the following criteria to make my choices

(1) Which movie have i watched the most - this is a pretty good indicator that you really like the movie duuuuhh! This is why The Goonies got number 1 for me.

(2) Which movies affected me the most at the time i watched them and how long did it have an affect for in the shorter term. Dream a Little Dream.
I was totally in love with Meredith Salenger and liked the on screen chemistry with best friends corey and corey so this movie got into my top 10 easily. And i loved the soundtrack!

(3) Which films did i feel most nostalgic about
i watched Ghostbusters with my Dad and has been the only one i watched with him so this made it.

oneyedwilly, i used those same criteria's for myself.

my top movies, were movies i had seen so much as a kid, and they just stuck with me, or had some kind of an effect on me, and became nostalgic to me, for when i think of my childhood, i think of these movies and can pin point where i was when i first saw them...etc.

they also became movies that i made sure i owned even if i had to splurge on the vhs tape

with that said, here was my list.

1. aliens
2. valley girl
3. halloween II
4. return of the living dead
5. purple rain
6. back to the future
7. 16 candles
8. modern girls
9. eddie & the cruisers
10. midnight madness
11. footloose
12. spaceballs
13. monster squad
14. clue
15. streets of fire
16. night of the creeps
17. just one of the guys
18. fire with fire
19. real genius
20. poltergeist

This list is so different. A few horrors thrown in there too. Whats the interest in Purple Rain? BTTF came after it?

RESPONSE TO ONEYEDWILLY......

When I compiled my list of top 20 I was thinking, not of what is "most popular or well known movies" (no brat pack movies.) but which movies are most nostalgic to me? Which movies do I watch each and every time its aired on television? Which movies did I make it a point to own? I own all but two movies on my top 20 list.

I shared my list with some friends and family. They were surprised that Ghostbusters was not on the list. I told them it was. For some reason…I was ashamed to find it was not on the list. Point being some of us may have forgotten an awesome movie to add to our list. It happens.

So I revised it. LoL. Ghostbusters as my number 4. I also had to bump out Hello again and My Chauffeur. Because a few other movies I like more are: License to drive, Moving Violations and Police Academy. Those movies I can watch over and over again so make them on my top 20. I will respond to GENRE WARS. Thanks for reading.

P.S. The Lost boys 2 and 3 are so lame.

I was surprised The Lost Boys got number 1 spot but it just has a great cast and a great soundtrack.

Devolution here,

I'm going to tell you that my criteria wasn't basic, but the movies that I chose were: A) Movies that I loved as a kid. B) Movies from every genre that I could. (I mean really, I did watch Friday the 13th part 4 and the Evil Dead 2 that much.) Movies that I still love, and movies that I quote often. There are definitely subs that I would have made, but I think it's tough when you are trying to be fair. I mean I left out Ferris and the Goonies, mostly because I watched them so often when I was 12, they aren't something I want to watch now.

WE are DEVO

Love how you left out movies you watched so much...such a reverse spin on things . . .Love it!

For me it was hard.....I knew it was going to be typical 80s movies in the majority of my list.....if I had a top 30 or 50......I would have had so many newer favs.....Tuff Turf, NOTC(omet), Nice Girls Don't Explode!

First I thought which movies do I hold dear to my heart?.....did I watch it alot then?.....do I still watch it alot now?.

Music had a big part in choosing Dirty Dancing and Dream a Little Dream for me.

We didn't own a VCR well until I was in my middle teens. So on special occasions my mom would rent one......those big suitcase looking rental boxes.......and everytime I would rent Dirty Dancing! everytime.....we'd laugh and rewind and pause Swayze's butt shot. ha!

I love DALD just like Willy here. The Two Corey's and the sdtrk....I owned the tape of the sdtrk then......it had to be up there on my list.

The only one that made it that I didn't grow up with is My Bodyguard!! and my criteria is it's one of those that blew me away with how great it was......I felt for the characters, the teens were great, an all around awesome movie in my opinion!!

Willy you totally have some rarities on yours!!

Stealing Home is a good movie!....Jewel of the Nile over Romancing the Stone??? hehe now I can see why it's because of people's personal reasons? [Wink] I actually tried watching Jewel recently and couldn't it was weird how much I really couldn't watch it.

I'm now kicking myself because I should have put License to Drive and The Great Outdoors on my list....I really should have. so that's to answer your question Willy.

I'm going to bump my My Bodyguard thread.....I wonder if Earth Angel has seen it yet?? She always wanted too.

I think i remember it being really big around 1985, is that right? I watched the Jazz Singer with my Dad around then and strangly enough liked it...i mean that was the first real artist starring in his own movie id ever seen and was just amazed by the music.

I actually played a game with a friend where we started by trying to guess each others top 5.. then we gave each other hints to help fill in the blanks of the remaining ones we didn't get .. then we moved to the next 5 until we finally filled in the top 15 movies for each of us. We left the finally 5 flicks for later to review and move films in or out of our top 20.

The cool thing was that the other person brought up movies that helped each of us remember some of our favs we might have otherwise forgotten.

It was actually a blast do it that way.. I highly recommend it!

I actually compiled a list of 42 movies and struggled to ween it down to 20. I share Ronnie's love for Purple Rain, in fact, not sure how I didn't have that on my list.

My list was generated primarily to pay homage to my childhood memories. There's only a couple movies in my top 20 that I hadn't seen as a kid, (Some Kind Of Wonderful and Valley Girl), in fact, *sorry in advance* today I'd likely replace those two movies with Purple Rain and (Without A Trace or Author Author or On The Right Track). Many on my list were ones I've seen at a younger age on the movie channel, when they played movies over and over and over...I'm not kidding when I say I've watched Rocky 3, First Blood, Without A Trace, and many others....at least 20-30 times each. It's all about remembering the care free days for me.....* I could easily do a top 50....it was hard to pick just 20.....
