I've had alot of fun reading the responses to Secret Admirer's thread of top ten teen movies....so here is my idea to spark discussion.
After watching Vicky Christina Barcelona the other night I thought to myself "it's an ok movie but I really don't see how Penelope Cruz won the best supporting Oscar?"
It got me thinking.....who really chooses the Oscar picks? What determines a nominee? I never watched the Oscars in the 80s. I was a child and really to me they seemed like more "adult" movies and I wasn't interested. It's interesting now to see what the Oscar buzz was back then......Does anyone have any good 80s memories of watching the Oscars?
So here's my game for you.
This is your own Oscar ballot for the year 1986. I will give you the nominees You pick your winner!
as an extra.....you can also choose from the Razzie winner of that year.
and feel free to add any conversation you feel is necessary!! (you don't have to fill out a ballot, all conversation is encouraged)

Ugh, those movies look so serious. I have not seen many of them. However, I did like Mona Lisa, and I see that on the list. Under The Cherry Moon is awesome if you're a Prince fan, which I am, but I can understand why that got the Razzie. In 1986, my favorite film vote would have been cast for Transformers: The Movie.
Honestly there are about a hundred films I would put over most of those nominees. It might not be fair to judge a movie before you've seen it, but I'm a good judge of what kind of movie interests me. 1986 was a great year with plenty of my favorite films. Big Trouble In Little China, Ferris, Rad, Pretty In Pink, Cobra, Blue Velvet, Soul Man, just to name a few.

aliens is one of my favorite movies of all time. and for the longest time, i had never known it was nominated for best picture. i think that's awesome, it got nominated.
i can't say much about any of these movies. i haven't seen the majority of them. and if i have, it was later on in life. i was too young to want to see most of them.
but aliens was the first purchased vhs tape i ever owned.
my husband is an out of this world prince fan. he made me sit and watch under the cherry moon with him. i loved it.

Platoon [blah blah blah "war is hell"] Children of a Lesser God [blah blah blah "being deaf is hell"] Hannah and Her Sisters The Mission [[blah blah blah "the uncivilised are hell"] A Room with a View [[blah blah blah "being English is hell"] Razzie winner: Howard the Duck

Paul Newman-Color of Money Dexter Gordon-Round Midnight William Hurt-Children of a Lessor God Bob Hoskins-Mona Lisa James Woods-Salvador Razzie, Prince-Under the Cherry Moon
Haven't seen 'Round Midnight' but I'll throw it out to Newman - he deserves one.
quote:Best Actress
Sigourney Weaver-Aliens Sissy Spacek-Crimes of the Heart Marlee Matlin-Children of a Lessor God Jane Fonda-The Morning After Kathleen Turner- Peggy Sue Got Married Razzie, Madonna-Shanghi Surprise
REALLY TOUGH that one. Wanted Sigourney to win, but I've got to say that since being deaf is hell Marlee did a grand job.
quote:Best Director
Oliver Stone-Platoon Woody Allen-Hannah and Her Sisters James Ivory-Room with a View Roland Joffe-The Mission David Lynch- Blue Velvet Razzie: Prince -Under the Cherry Moon
I'll give it to Lynch, but if Stone won I wouldn't call a foul.
quote:Best Supporting Actor
Michael Caine-Hannah and Her Sisters Tom Berenger-Platoon Willem Dafoe-Platoon Denholm Elliot-A Room with a View Dennis Hopper-Hoosiers Razzie,Jerome Benton -Under the Cherry Moon
Willem stole Platoon for me.

Dianne Wiest-Hannah and Her Sisters Tess Harper-Crimes of the Heart Piper Laurie-Children of a Lessor God Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio-The Color of Money Maggie Smith- A Room with a View Razzie, Dom Deluise (as Aunt Kate) -Haunted Honeymoon
Love Dianne Weist, but she grated on me in the first half of 'Hannah'. It's a tie between Piper and Mary. Plus I can't remember 'Crimes' very well.

"Take my Breath Away" Top Gun "Glory of Love" Karate Kid II "Life in a Looking Glass" That's Life "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" Little Shop of Horrors "Somewhere Out There" An American Tail Razzie, "Love or Money" from Under the Cherry Moon
You have a problem with that Mr. Lawrence?

Yeah, but how many people still watch any of those movies, hmm?
Damn. Hoist by my own petard. I've been a fool.

Yeah... but that had more to do with all the canoodling that went on between the two of you than the movie itself - amirite? I'm right aren't I? You know I'm right.

So I bought Crimes of the Heart on vhs on one of my hauls lately.....I knew nothing of it.....so i'll add that to the watch list soon.
I love Woody Allen movies and i've tried to watch Hannah and Her Sisters in the last year and I couldn't sit down and watch it....but Annie Hall was that way for me at first. Now Manhattan I love!!!
quote:Now how many people still watch these movies?
That is sarcasm right? Back to School,Ruthless People,Ferris and Top Gun I try to make annual movies
"Canoodling" that's too cute! I'm sure they did! You all are the ones that have turned me onto Prince movies so I will add Under the Cherry Moon to my watch list....done!

Man, I can't stand Mastrantonio in The Color of Money.
I like the movie but to me her character does not even need to be in it.
The movie would have had the same impact without Vincent having a girl friend.
I seriously cannot stand it when she says, "On the snap Vincent."
I am extremely surprised that she was nominated.

I'm not a Mastrantonio fan per say, but she was good in COM. Both Carmen and Fast Eddie were trying to play the talented but dim Vincent. Both con artists (he a hustler, she a thief) recognize that the other knows Vince is a cocky but gullible guy and that sets the tone from there on in.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the film but still believe that she has no real significance in the film.
I think Carmen is a flimsy character. The movie would not be that much different if her character was not in it or there was a different character.
Minnesota Fats could have been the other character. Now that would have been good.
