Henry Rush (Ted Knight) is a conservative San Francisco cartoonist of children's comic book heroine, Cosmic Cow. Henry resides in the upstairs of a two story apartment with his wife, Muriel (Nancy Dussault) a former big band singer who is now a free-lance photographer. The couples college-aged daughters.. brunette Jackie (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) a bank teller and blonde Sara (Lydia Cornell) a freshman at San Francisco State, both wanting independence decide to move into the downstairs apartment. You get the show's set-up and we all know what Ted Knight can bring by watching the movie "Caddyshack"!
The real key to the show's success was the character Monroe (Jim J. Bullock) who is Sara's beyond goofy school friend as well as a constant thorn in Henry's side. Monroe's interaction with Henry lead to some of the show's best comedic moments.
During the subsequent seasons.. Henry's hippie niece April stayed with the family for a year, Muriel became pregnant and gave birth to son, Henry's hated mother-in-law Iris was a semi-regular, Jackie became a fashion designer and was engaged to a policeman, but broke the engagement, and went to Italy to pursue her career. Sara became a TV weather girl and eventually Monroe and she graduated from college.
Not everyone might know this, but "Too Close for Comfort" was based on the British television series, "Keep It in the Family"..

IIRC, Henry (Ted Knight) wore a different sweater from a college/university all the time! From what I understand, students from various colleges kept sending the TV producer their school's clothing for Henry to wear!

Steven.. that is an awesome tidbit! I haven't watched "Too Close For Comfort" since the 80's, but now you have me interested in checking out the various university shirts.

I remember Ted Knight wearing the college sweaters. I remember Sara being the ditziest, stupidest weather girl ever too! lmao! I used to watch this show every week, but I thought the bit with Monroe and Ted Knight got a little old.

Loved this show. Remember that dark headed daughter playing in the movie The Warriors. Really miss Ted Knights humor. Does anyone know if this is out on DVD?

Did anyone else read something recently about Lydia Cornell who played Sara on "Too Close For Comfort" having a "There's Something About Mary" stalker who befriended her saying he was a 'Secret JAG Agent' and a 'federal criminal attorney'?
Just hadn't heard anything about Lydia in years and then this surfaced a few weeks ago.
