Which songs really make a Christmas to you?

For me (just a few to mention, there's a dozens more):

Dean Martin - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
Bobby Helms - Jingle Bell Rock
Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song
Chuck Berry - Run Rudolph Run
+ other Sinatra and Dean Martin type "crooners".

Jon Bon Jovi - Baby Please Come Home For Christmas
Sheryl Crow & Eric Clapton - Merry Christmas Baby
Bryan Adams - Run Rudolph Run
Celine Dion - O Holy Night

Any of the classics, like the first group you mentioned, Wraith. I hate newer Christmas tunes, like that awful Mariah Carey cd! Maybe Celine isn't so bad, but I would rather they keep the Christmas songs classic, and not try to do something "different" or "trendy" or "exciting" to compete with one another. Love Dino, Frank, Sammy. I have a cd with a collection of their Christmas songs.

I'm not a country music fan but many a Christmas during my childhood, I was forced to repeatedly listen to Alabama's Christmas. Now, can't pass through the holidays without listening to it at least once...I know every word to every song. Unfortunately, my wife grew up with Kenny and Dolly's Christmas, which is downright dreadful...but hard to complain when I have Alabama Christmas playing in the background.

Otherwise, I love most of the originl classics with Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, etc. Not a huge fan of any modern Christmas renditions...just the oldies please...just the oldies.

In the Christmas show (for UK read : Panto) that I'm in the band for this year, there's always a Christmas song at the end of the show. This Year they are doing a medley (generally a verse / chorus of each and a final chorus repeat of the last song to end). The songs chosen are:

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York
Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody

I tell you, when I get to the end of the rehearsals, then the seven performances next week, I can see me really hating those songs.

We do have a family tradition though. We started doing it as kids (I was real young at the time) and we've just kept it going.

We always get together at some point and listen to the John Denver and The Muppets Christmas Album. The version of 12 Days Of Christmas is great!

Edit: Actually, because it's been released at this time of year, one that I can see becoming a Christmas go-to is Susan Boyle's album. It's really good, and although not specifically Christmassy, it really has a feel that goes well with a warm fire on a cold day.

I was just curious. While we are on the subject of Christmas songs, does anybody recall from the 80s Irish actor, singer and writer Frank Kelly's side-splitting, witty "Christmas Countdown," which is a take-off of the carol "The 12 Days of Christmas."?

I listened to Christmas with Dino while we put up our tree last weekend. I got out some others too, but my hubby wanted to watch football. Carpenters Christmas is a good one- I'm going to put that one on tomorrow, hopefully our guests approve.
That Kenny and Dolly song is awful. I worked in a mall over Christmas break one year while I was in college, and the music that was piped in throughout the mall was comprised of maybe 10 Christmas songs total. It was a constant rotation of those 10 songs, and one of those was that Kenny and Dolly song. If I heard it again, I'd probably pull my hair out LOL!

As a non christian (non anything really!), some of my favorite xmas songs are the traditional ones, probably a hangover from my catholic upbringing.

I love
We Three Kings
O holy night
Joy to the world

But some of my real fave xmas songs are

All I want for xmas - Mariah Carey
Rudolph the red nosed drag queen - Ru Paul
Xmas tree - Lady Gaga ("the only place you'll want to be is underneath my xmas tree")

I thought so too, until it dawned upon me that both Rage Against The Machine and that X Factor bloke are signed to the same label, so a hollow victory for common decency.

Not at all, it was never about stopping the record company making money, it was a moral victory against the capitalization and the monopolization of the Christmas chart by a show that has months of advertising and brainwashing under its belt so no other song by any other artist ever stands a chance. We broke that cycle my friend, and with a flaming good tune too. Huzzah to the underdog and retro anarchy I say.
