Christian Bale hasn't put a foot wrong in choosing his roles from American Psycho onwards. Not too hyped by the new trailer, quite liked The Sarah Conner Chronicles Series 1, so far, Summer belongs to Star Trek: we'll see if this or GI Joe can do better.

Just seen an add for this film and like the bit where Christian Bale turns round and says i'll be back, good little not to Arnie.

Are you guys serious??? It was an absolute mess. Nothing makes any sense or adds up with the earlier films...it was completely laughable. I could literally write a book about everything that's wrong with it.

I saw it. I liked it and give it a 7/10. You have to understand the first 3 Terminator movies, AND watch the Sarah Conner Chronicles for all of it to click. Basically though, they did the same thing the Start Trek writers did in that, it is a "new" look at the Terminator series. It's not really supposed to match up with the old movies. They intimate during the movie that the future is not "set" and can be altered. They REALLY should had made this clearer to the audience.

Does this make sense to you guys?

so far, i hear the acting in terminator is bad. is that possible with bale?

either way, i still want to see it.

The "new look" is nothing more than photographic plagerism of the Fallout video game series. And even if you grant the film the extremely generous pass of "not really supposed to match up with the old movies", it still makes no sense in its own right. It's as hackneyed and cliched as you can get. Every single scene was ripped off from other sci-fi films (The Road Warrior, Aliens, Predator, The Matrix, Resident Evil: Extinction, etc.). The entire ending is lifted from the first film. They blatantly steal their robot design concepts from The Transformers, and expend an inordinate amount of time trying to actually turn Terminator into a Transformers movie. Every single actor is wooden and uninspiring - I didn't care about any of them for even one second. This film represents everything that I hate about modern slam-bang MTV Michael Bay-style movie-making. All gloss, no substance. All effects, no story. Explain Skynet's strategy to me. What about it makes logical sense? What is the point of anything that happens in this movie? It ranks as absolutely the most insulting piece of phoned-in, ultra-plastic cinematic trash I have ever seen.

Sorry, jdocster, I'm not trying to insult your sensibilities as a movie-goer, but this film just offended me so much on an artistic level.

The original Terminator is one of my all-time favorite movies. T2 was a bigger, more bombastic film that traded the darker noir elements of the original for the slicker big-budget action antics of a Hollywood blockbuster - and it was rife with plot holes, I'll admit - but it was still exciting as hell and advanced the greater story forward in interesting ways. The third one magnified all the plot holes of T2 and slipped down the quality ladder a few more rungs by rehashing the same old tired plot, employing a few inadvisable comedy bits, and in general just lacking in the excitement department.

But Salvation is just a whole new level of bad. It fell completely off the ladder and landed in a pile of dung. The plot makes absolutely no sense, the acting is atrocious, the terminators have become Michael Bay's vision of The Transformers, all the throwback references and one-liners are misplaced and cringe-worthy, the story amounts to little more than an endless series of chases, and the whole thing expects you to suspend your disbelief to the point of delusion. Add to that its generic, drab-yet-glossy cinematography that has been done to death in a hundred video games and movies; its obligatory casting of a popular rapper to pander to the 13-year-old suburban white boy crowd; the eye-rolling attempts to interject its politically-correct multiculturalist reading of future society; the PG-13 sanitizing of what should by all means be a very dark and violent film; the endless array of superfluous characters with no purpose other than to help advance the silly meandering plot; its ridiculous "female warrior" stereotypes (i.e. 100-pound models with covergirl hair and makeup as tough no-nonsense chicks that can beat the bejesus out of hulking men); every cliche imaginable from the brave little tomboy to the flawed would-be hero seeking redemption to the prophesized "chosen one" (God, can I see that in one more science-fiction film); ultra kinetic pacing designed for people with ADHD; blatant disregard for the conditions and circumstances of the future world as explained in the first two films; horrid dialog (typically delivered in a dramatic whisper or shout); foreshadowing even a child could pick up on ("It's quiet down here...almost as if the machines knew we were coming"); highly derivative set design, costumes and props; zero grounding in science (Where are the results of the fallout - the radiation poisoning, ozone depletion, surface cooling, the millions of pounds of ash, etc.? Why is there no concept of how artificial intelligence works? Or for that matter, a complete lack of comphrension of military tactics and strategy?); and basically a total lack of imagination or cleverness.

I can't believe that you are cynical enough to actually accept this piece of trash as bona fide entertainment. I have to conclude that you're being extremely generous and awarding it merit on the basis of its action sequences alone. But its just way too much of a basturdization of the originals and good movie-making in general to be deserving of that generosity on your part. I'll bet you anything that your opinion of this movie will drop significantly with repeated viewing. But I'm sorry if I sounded like I was jumping down your throat; that wasn't my intention at all and you're certainly entitled to your opinion (even if I have the right one [Wink] ).

journey,

I really like your passion about the Terminator series. I can see it really meant a lot to you. Hopefully Bale will be able to salvage the "new" series during the next two movies. I understand where you are coming from. I really do. I felt that way about Predator 2. I was very disappointed that Arnold wasn't in part 2 and the storyline didn't measure up for me either.

I too loved T1 and when T2 came out, I was completely blown away by it. I don't think we are ever going to be able to recapture the "1980s" feel of these movies again (I know T2 released in 1991)unless James Cameron comes back. I didn't like T3 as much as the first 2 movies. It felt hollow and somehow incomplete to me.

I do know what you mean about Terminator Salvation. It's vastly different than the first 3 movies, and, it never really gave you any sense of character development, insight into the storyline beyond the next scene, any kind of explanation that fully fleshed out the context of the movie. For people who have never seen any of the other movies this would either leave them rather flat, or, the opposite, wooed them with non-stop action.

It definitely could have and should have been done better. If the writers listen to the reviews about this movie, and, plug the holes, it could be much better. Is this what the new look (take) on this series is going to be about? I think it will get better (I hope so), but, at the same time, I liked it for what it was, not what it isn't.

One more thing journey. Your opinion is always welcomed by me. I really do like your take on movies, and your opinion in general.

I don't care if James Cameron comes back and he resurrects Shakespeare to help him scribe the next two sequels - there is no salvation for this franchise - it's been terminated.

Nice review Journey.

Good action, average movie.

As far as I'm concerned this story terminated with T2: Judgement Day, Linda Hamilton's soulful epilogue was all we needed to power down Skynet's technological terror, assuring us, that if a cyborg can learn empathy, then there’s still some hope for the human race. Roll credits, end of.

T3: Rise Of The Machines and The Sarah Conner Chronicles were just deveritive after thoughts IMO entertaining in their own way, but not 'Terminator' proper.

T4: Salvation has plenty of cool set pieces, but lacks a decent story, an excellent actor in Christian Bale sans iconic stalwart Arnie and where's Brad Fidel's theme tune? Its not a complete disaster, but not nearly as good as it could've been even for an unrelated, humourless sequel. There were parts where it resembled the dreaded 'Matrix' sequels and whole scenes lifted and poorly imitated from live-action Manga classic 'Casshern'.

Time travel storylines allow the producers to take narrative liberties forever, simply going back & forth negating & creating storylines at will, but the law of diminishing returns has already come into effect, so I doubt they'll be enough audience interest for more Sky Net crafted carnage in the years to come.
