hi all as some of you know i fell at work 3 times last feb. and am still having back and wrist problems? well i went to my wrist surgeon yesterday and the 4th surgery i had for carpal tunnel on my left wrist did not help? i have more pain and cannot use my left hand much at all if i do i drop everything i pick up! the last thing the doc can do is a total wrist fusion which will get rid of the pain and i will be able to pick things up again without dropping them but i won't be able to bend my wrist at all!! i am still debating the surgery but at this point have no choice if i want to be pain free and able to use my left hand again? does anyone know anybody who had this surgery done? i have been finding out more about it here on the web too as this is permanent and once it is done nothing else can be done to my wrist? dee

Wow that sounds aweful. I am so sorry you are having to endure so much. I don't know of anyone who has had that surgery, but I have a shoot today with the women's basketball team and I will ask the head trainer here at the university if he knows anything about it.

My mom had carpal tunnel surgery just a few months ago, it did help her...but I know from other people who have had it done, that it is not always a permanent fix.
Do you wear wrist braces?
My mom wears one alot, and it helps, and she has a gel pad for the computer so her wrist isn't laying on the table. That helps. My mom had a neck fusion. She had 3 vertebrae in her neck fused together. First she had 2 done, then that seemed to weakened the ones surrounding it, so she had to have more done. She has limited movement on how she can twist her neck. But, it did help.
I would definately make sure you have got more than one opinion, and that there aren't any other options, before you do something permanent.
My mom had surgery on her foot-it's called tarsal tunnel surgery...it's just like carpal tunnel- where they release the nerves that are all knotted up in your ankle....well the first time it didn't help, so she did it a second time, and they totally screwed her foot up. She has been to multiple doctors, and specialists and has done tons of physical therapy and other treatments to help fix it, and nothing has fixed it. She's in pain every day in her foot. They all don't know what to do with it, so she's just living with it.
Have you ever had steroid injections? Those helped my mom.

Buffgirl,
Sorry to hear about your pain. I would definitely get a second opinion. Has your doctor given you cortisone shots for the pain? They can last for months. My fathers wife got her ankle fused. She hates it and she still has pain. Of course this could be a totally different situation than yours. Have you read about curcumin?

Sorry to hear that Dee. Doesn't sound like you are rushing into anything, so at least it will be an informed decision. Are there activities / past times that you do that really requires a lot of wrist movement? Not to take away from the obvious inconveinience, my point is, that if you don't play guitar, for example, people can generally re-learn things very quickly. So...if you can't hold things with your hand and you are generally in a lot of pain...if you have to have it done, after a while, you may not even notice the restriction, and you will likely be doing all the things you've always done. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Buffalogirl, have you heard anyting yet, or contacted any new doctors? I would think you'd be able to find a good surgeon in Buffalo. There are a lot of specialists here too, if you want to travel that far. I have a doctor who has patients from all over- Ohio, Tenn., W.Virginia, Kentucky. You may want to look into the orthopedists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers. Just a thought, for a second or even third opinion. I don't know how you get by and stay so upbeat with all of that pain, girl! Hope you feel better soon.

hi pittsburghgirl!! no i have not heard anything yet and if i want a second opinion i have to wait a year cause my last surgery was in august of last year and no doctor will even see me until a year is up i did contact a specialist here named dr. tesco he is a hand and wrist specialist/surgeon in fact my chiropractor is good friends with him and talked to him for me too and he told tony he couldn't see me? because it is comp. too alot of doc's are reluctant to even talk to me? but this specialist is in the same office as my back doc so i am gonna try to talk to him next tuesday when i go there for my back problem thanks for the advice too i appreaciate it. i do have a high tolerance for pain but it is getting really bad now so i am getting tired of it fast! lol have a good night dee

Hey Dee, you said you fell 3 times at work on the same wrist? What do you do for work if you don't mind me asking. Just curious how this happened.

hi 80'srocked i was actually a office manager for a waterproofing co. in a office building 5 minutes from my house lol i was there early that morning and decided to take a bag of garbage to the dumpster around the corner from the building as i cleaned out some old papers and stuff from my desk etc. well as soon as i turned the corner it was solid ice under a light coating of snow and i fell and hit my head first then landed on my butt i thought i cracked my head open it hit so hard!!! then i tried to get up 2x and both times fell on my hands and knees i had 3 big bumps on my head no concussion but dizzy, and instant pain in my back and left wrist then i had already had a appt. with my wrist doctor the next day and found out the right wrist was broken from the fall fun wow huh?
