Art Rooney, local owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was named the new Ambassador to Ireland today by the President. He will be moving to Ireland soon. I wonder who is going to be overseeing the team while he's gone? He was literally at practice and in the locker room daily. I always thought he looked like someone's disheveled uncle- his hair is always unkempt and he wears those glasses that are 4 sizes too big for his face, ha,ha. But he seems like an alright guy.

Shouldn't an ambassador be someone with international experience and diplomatic skills?

Hmm... do you even know anything about the man to make such a comment? His ancestors are from Ireland, he is a strong supporter for peace in Northern Ireland, and also organized the American Ireland Fund in the 1970's. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3989143Posts: 2289 | From: Pittsburgh | Registered: Nov 2008 | Site Updates: 0

Firstly, his name is Daniel M Rooney, not Art. His late father's name was Art, as is his son. But his name is Dan. Not Art. Dan.
In 1976, Rooney and Tony O'Reilly (former CEO of HJ Heinz and Co) formed the Ireland Fund. The American Irish Foundation had actually been formed in 1963 by President Kennedy and Irish President de Valera. The Ireland fund is merely an offshoot of the American Irish Foundation, and is only one of many Irish funds around the world.
From my reading, it sounds like he's been a wonderful campaigner for fundraising within the American Irish communities. The very first fundraiser was held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and raised money for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I know myself as someone who does a lot of fundraising for children's hospital charities, how much work is involved (of course, I'm nowhere near that level!)
As great as his charitable work is, it doesn't necessarily qualify him as an international diplomat. I'd never heard of the guy, wouldn't know him from Adam, and in fact I don't really care much who the ambassador is, because as you told me once before, since I'm not American it's none of my business. I wish him all the best.
And at least the new ambassador isn't Bono.
Hmmm.... I think the question should be "Do you know anything about the man?"

I apologize to all of the Rewinders who feel that I may have misled you into believing that our new Ambassador to Ireland is not a Rooney or from Pittsburgh, PA. I am not allowed to make a mistake here or anywhere else in my life. I have heard over the past few days both names on the news and radio : Dan Rooney and Art Rooney, his brother, both of whom are involved in ownership of the Steelers, but that is another story. God forbid I make a mistake and mix up their names. I am sure to be sentenced to hell for that one.

Of course you can make a mistake, I just didn't like the way you responded to my simple question. Instead of answering it, you just insulted me for asking it. That was my only problem. And I'm gonna respond in the same way, it might not be the most mature way to do things, but it made me feel better!
You do tend to have fairly snarky attitude towards myself and others on this site, and whether it's deliberate or unintentional, you don't have any right to complain when you are treated the way you treat others.
And I still stand by my statement that I'm glad the new ambassador isn't Bono! Coz nobody deserves that.

How could Bono be the American Ambassador to Ireland? I thought that he was Irish, and an Irish Citizen. Even if he had dual citizenship it wouldn't make sense. The Snarkstergirl

It's a joke, Joyce. But... if anyone could make it happen, it would be Bono.

So that is Joyce? You're calling me Joyce? I think that is kind of blasphemus if you ask me- that stupid story about "her life". Sorry, I am not a left-winger here.

I've seen that ugly album cover. I'll post the link later. Get off my back sicko. I am entitled to having my right wing opinion, and what you posted above is sacriligous.

I have no idea how someone needed to rip me dirty about the Rooneys, and post some ugly trannie's picture and say that it was me.

Bono? The one who campaigns against Third World Debt yet moved his publishing company to the Netherlands to avoid higher Irish taxes? These higher taxes he would have paid would help his Africa mission according to this article. I guess he wants everyone else to fund his own personal interests.......

This thread started out one-way and ended up somewhere else entirely. Its out there (where every thread wants to be) like Chris Walken in the 'Dead Zone'.
Pittsburghgirl, yes you are going to hell for that error, absolutely no two ways about it. You & Denis Leary are going straight to ****ing hell: no detours, no redemption, no nothing
Bono's media image portrays him as a sanctimonious prick, I applaud his efforts to end poverty but lament his naivety because he hasn't done much research into the issues and ends up taking snaps with Malthusian mass murderers like George W. Bush (trust me Rewinders, that's gonna be the equivalent of smiling in a photo with Hitler). I won't say Bono’s a traitor to his own cause, but the headline writes itself: U2, Brutus?

OMG, this thread has turned into the funniest one ever! I asked a question that should have had a simple answer, and now I've been called "pompous", "blasphemous" (over a photo that I didn't even post!), a "sicko" and "sacreligious" !!
I'm so glad I'm not overly sensitive, or my apparantly significant left wing feelings (where the hell did that come from?) might be hurt!
