"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway... I've started to make a tape... in my head... for Laura. Full of stuff she likes. Full of stuff that make her happy. For the first time I can sort of see how that is done. "

Paul, I have taken that quote into consideration long before I ever saw High Fidelity, and long before it even came out.
High Fidelity by itself ranks probably #2 on my favorite Cusack movies.
Anyway, as for my mix tapes, or CD's... As I have said, there are rules.
1) first song has to have long playing value 2) second song must be a close but better genre than the first song 3) Never put techno on purpose. 4) Never go depressing unless the whole mix is. 5) Go out on a limb with a song from a group you like but don't know the song well. 6) Never put back to back songs that a person doesn't know if you are making it for someone. 7) Never push your religion of music on someone, (on CD's I made for my wife, they would have DEVO, or Talking Heads or Oingo Boingo, but only one song total) 8) Play it till you hate it, and then put it away for a year. 9) As I said: Never the same group, and if you do, never the same album. 10) Never do a true mix. The Cure and Frank Sinatra, and Ice Cube shouldn't be on the same mix.
There are more.
I'll have a mix later,
We are DEVO

I like to think of my mix as an eclectic, out there music festival: where a band will play a set or a song and then we go over via satellite 'Live Aid' style and someone else pops up does a few songs before we cut back and so on. Its the only way you can put uncle Luther & Chris Cornell on the same bill!
