I like both equally as long as the gift card is to one of my favourite places.
If the gift giver isn't 100% sure what my favourite places are then just give me cash.

Cards are nice to ensure that you actually spend the money on yourself VS spending gift money on bills....I guess that's not actually too bad if you really need to. I'd rather get money and spend it on what I want. Part of our gift from my parents this year was money for M & M Meat Shop...they have lots of great things to eat and it's a practical gift...but I would rahter have cash or a Walmart card to get some of the Blue Rays on sale for boxing day!

I'll take good hard cash over anything anyday. I don't mind gift cards as long as it is for a place I will use it. If not....goes right on ebay.

Well....my husband and I got in to a debate (a small one) over what to get his brother...because I think cash is so unemotional (I am not sure that's the right word)...but it lacks any kind of thought. But, they are so hard to buy for...I said get them a gift card, which they want because they eat out all the time, but they wouldn't say what their favorite place was...so my husband kept saying just give them cash so they can go where ever they want. But, that's so boring.
It just feels impersonal when you just exchange gift cards and cash with people...I honestly would rather have something like what my one friend did, with the little book she gave me, that she wrote memories in it of things we did. One of the things she wrote that she liked the best about me...was my family...and I thought that was so sweet...she said..yeah I want them all, I wish they were mine. I thought that was the nicest thing, because I am really proud of my family.

I understand what you are saying ISIS, but someone like me who basically makes crap for a paycheck compared to most of all you guys, can use the cash more. It definitely means more to me than some cheesy trinket gift that will end up collecting dust.
