An impossible question, and also a hotly debated topic. For me when asked this question I like to break it down into era's. Example: Marlon Brando was the greatest actor of the 1950's. But I was asked today, hey, no excuses, who is the best.. Ever.. No era's just the best based on performance. So as by now you've gathered I like a list!! Here's my top 5 ever....
5: Al Pacino 4: Johnny Depp 3: Robert De Niro 2: Jack Nicholson 1: Marlon Brando..
Now debate people!!!!

1. Marlon Brando (no doubt!) I’m a BIG fan of his. I’ve seen every single one of his movies and love them ALL. (ok, with the exception of ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau’ and ‘A Countess from Hong Kong”) I also own quite an impressive Brando library.
2. Benicio Del Toro (I can’t explain what it is about him that I like so much, but to me, he definitely deserves his second spot)
3. Johnny Depp ( one of the greatest actors of modern times. I stopped liking him after ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ though)
4. Tom Hanks (remember ‘Philadelphia’? ‘Cast Away’?...)
5. Joaquin Phoenix (too bad he quits acting..)

I've got nearly all Marlon's films myself. Short a few. He is without doubt the best in my mind. On the Waterfront was a masterclass in acting as was Godfather. He's had more great performances than any other actor in cinema history. Only Depp can take over if he keeps up his form...
