I have always said that someone on that show or other shows like it, was going to do something like this...there are so many people on that show that they exploit...they know they aren't wrapped tight in the head, and they cut them up and make fun of them.

A shame....the show is very distasteful in their editing and portrayal of individuals with obvious mental health issues. It's kind of like a form of bullying, in their encouragement for thousands of people to laugh at, or poke fun at one individual. Playing with lives which are very frail...all to make some money money money. Shameful.

I don't think the show exploits them, I think after so many years on the air, people should know how they might be portrayed. And if they are a little touched in the head like this woman was (have you seen her audition, it was like a trainwreck), her family and/or friends should have kept her away.
These people want to be on tv, and the only way they will get on there is to turn up to Idol auditions behaving crazy, and if Idol shows them as crazy it's not Idol's fault!

I agree to an extent Stitch, but for me, there's an obvious difference between those who are obviously "show boating" and "semi sane", vs those who have serious mental health problems. And as for their family keeping them away, a lot of times, their family may have the same mental health problems and/or have distanced themselves, and/or have no legal control over their grown children. To add, my comments are unfortunately hypicritical...as, despite my opinion...I continue to watch the show every year

I totally agree with Kevdugp73. You do see the parents encouraging them, and they are messed up too....if you look at the parents...then alot of times it explains why the kids are such a mess....and every time I see the general public of America on this show, it scares the living heck out of me, that these people are actually walking the streets, and aren't getting professional mental help.
I watched this girl's audition tape...it made me mad, because it didn't take a panel of "experts" to know that girl was not the right "type" they are looking for, or know that she couldn't sing 1 note....they pushed her through to be on TV, because of the weirdness of what she was wearing, because of her obsession with Paula- you could tell Paula Abdul was totally uneasy about the whole thing-but at least she tries to be polite. Simon Cowell is so rude, he was making fun of her braces...and her clothing.
There's one thing to have to say to someone that they might not have a career in this field...but steer them in another direction...don't crush their lives.
They giggle and act like kids...and that isn't funny.
I was thinking about this last night, after I heard about it.
I watched American Idol for the past 2 seasons, and my mom and I said that we don't know whatever happens to those people. The ones who make it to the top...you never hear from them again....a few like Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks and Clay Aiken. But...what happened to David Cook, David Archuletta, Taylor Hicks and so many others that seemed so popular.
It's like there's such a shortage of singers today that have any talent at all, you'd think when one comes along they would be everywhere, but they can't even get 1 hit song out of anybody.
I was thinking about music the other day...and personally I absolutely hate Hip Hop, and I wish it would go away...it is totally devoid of emotion-I can't relate to that junk.
I really don't see how American Idol is actually improving the music industry.

Let's see- Jordin Sparks and Taylor Hicks both tanked after releasing albums. Not sure what David Cook is doing now- did he go on tour yet? David Archuleta= Non-talent. He sucked, the only people who really liked him were the teeny-bopper 12 and 13 year olds, and they have probably moved on to the next "big thing". Ruben Studdard hasn't done too well either. I thought that Breakin movie was all about hip hop music? I have never seen it.

Jordin Sparks is really popular here, she has had a number one single and a couple of top ten songs too. I'm glad Taylor Hicks has vanished off the face of the earth, he wasn't really a singer, just an entertainer. He should do kids birthday parties.
I still don't have any sympathy for people who complain about being embarassed on Idol. They have to sign waivers before they perform, that allow Idol to show anything that may be embarassing.
Kevdug, it's true that families can't always stop them from auditioning and making fools of themselves, but these are often the same families and friends who lie to them and say that they are great singers, feeding their unfortunate self delusions.

Do you really think they are lying? I don't always think so...I think alot of people don't know what a good singer is "suppose" to sound like....maybe compared to them singing, they do think the other person is good.
Even if they have to sign waivers...if your mentally ill to that degree....are those people capable of understanding that they are being made fun of...or do they just want the attention...and it doesn't matter to them.
I know there's no way I'd try out for something like that.....but someone who is oblivious to thinking "normally"....there is no way to know what's going on in their mind, so it's easy to say for me not to do it, but I can see where they might not understand what's happening. I hope that makes sense.
People that absolutely know that someone is unstable...are mean, for allowing someone to be mad fun of.

Would they actually need American Idol to be noticed if they had that good of a singing voice in the first place?

Well...since they interview hundreds of thousands of people-and ALOT of those people keep coming back year after year, and then spend a ton of money to get to the auditions, they sleep on the sidewalks, and go through all of that...and then barely anybody ever gets a hit record. That is what is sad. That there are hundreds of thousands of people ...and some can sing...but nobody makes a hit record.
Carrie Underwood's one song ...the one about "Before He Cheats"....about her smashing in his headlights and ripping his car apart...that is like condoning vandelism...if someone cheats on you..you dump them...who needs that...you don't go commit a felony. That's the kind of junk they sing about today.

Listen to the song...or better yet.. watch the scene in Breakin where Ozone takes Kelly to watch the one Breakdancer dance to the song "Move Your Body"...the song and scene have a meaning to it, and it's nothing like what I have heard playing on the radio today.

Just because she sings about it doesn't mean she condones it. "Move Your Body" could be sexually suggestive to someone if they have too much time on their hands and read into things too much since we are playing the role of Goody 2 Shoes. Every song ever made and current songs being made have meaning to someone. The particular one you mentioned didn't to me because I don't live in an 80's vaccuum but oh well......

I've actually met some pretty nice people on here. One can still enjoy the 80s, but I also enjoyed the 90s and modern times without living in a vaccuum realizing that I couldn't go back. To sum it up, why did you come back? You seem to have a habit of taking new topics, bending it into a tangent that has nothing to do with the topic and turning it into something about yourself in novel format. You should join a support group if you honestly crave attention that badly. I have no problem at all with someone's opinion as everyone is entitled to one but the generalized, biased way you always present yours pretty much demeans anyone who doesn't go along with your line of thought. It's like the time you said something along the lines of all modern actresses being trashy or something to that effect. Sure I think that about alot of past and present actresses but I'm not gonna vocalize it and call names because I have the common courtesy to realize that some folks like some modern actresses and respect other's opinions. We are all getting older and all enjoyed the 80s but it seems some people still have the mentality of a child when it comes to manners and a general respect of other's opinions. Sure I don't like some of the movies you like but I honestly don't have the amount of time on my hands that you do to trash any and everyone else's opinions. That being said people would probably respect you more on here and in life if you'd stop forcing your opinions down everyone's throat and having the attitude that your opinion and no one else's counts combined with a respect for everyone else......

Well...I am not sure how I turned American Idol in to a topic about myself.
Motley-nobody told you to come on here and comment on American Idol....
For someone who doesn't think I should be on here, why do you constantly come on every single topic that I say something on...and give me your 2 cents worth...???
If I want to talk about how the 80s was in comparison to every single thing on TV today-that actually relates to this entire messageboard...and if you don't want to read what I have to say...that's real easy...don't follow me around.

I don't follow you around lol where did you get that? I comment on topics I see fit to comment on until the topic gets off of topic like this one already has. The topic was American Idol and low and behold halfway through it turned into a bashing modern music thread starring yourself. I'm going to go ahead and be the better person (as that's obvious see no comments about me, what I did, what I miss,me, me, me, etc...) and end the bickering here.....
