We were discussing DVD recorders in another thread and I mentioned that you need to user the right kind of DVD media to get the longest life expectancy.
Most of this is from the website listed below.
Here's what I've found:
Why use DVD+R instead of DVD-R?
DVD-R is inferior to DVD+R because of this: - inferior error correction - inferior ‘wobble’ tracking - the fact its data writing methods look like an un-needed halfway point between CD-R and DVD+R.
On DVD+R a better method is used.
- The use of phase changes instead of changing the frequency of the wobble or amplitude spikes in the wobble - Complete phase changes are used - This makes it very easy to track the wobble, and to encode data into the wobble - The method is called ADIP "Address In Pregroove"
Because of this, DVD+R allows for more precise error correction.

It's pretty interesting when you start digging into it. If you read the all of the info using the links I posted you will learn a bunch of stuff. I suggest having a 'pint' while reading...
Really though, I have a bunch of CDs and DVDs and after I read that the shelf life for them is 5 to 10 years I got worried. Keep in mind that this only applies to CDs and DVDs that you create (burn), not to store bought "pressed" media. It's the dye that wears out in the media you create rendering them unreadable.
Just think, if you pay 25 cent per blank DVD it's cheap but it only lasts 5 to 10 years. If you pay 44 cents per blank DVD (DVD+R)it's still cheap, and, it lasts 70 to 100 years. It's quite a simple choice once you know about it.

I know how you feel. I have a bunch of DVD-Rs I have to do something with.
Hey the shelf-life alone on these Taiyo Yuden DVDs has me copying all of my current DVDs to Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs. What a PITA! All of my important data, movies, instructional stuff, music.

Did you read the info from some of the links? It's quite compelling, and, you can verify it on other websites.
