A friend of mine recently fell victim to an online blackmail scheme, and it’s terrifying how easily it can happen. He made the mistake of trusting someone online, and now they’re threatening to expose private messages unless he pays up. He’s unsure if he should respond, ignore them, or report it. I want to help him, but I don’t know where to start. Does anyone here know what the best course of action is? Any advice from someone who’s handled this before?

Blackmailers thrive on fear and quick reactions, so taking a step back and acting wisely is the best defense. It’s critical to avoid engaging with them further while gathering all possible evidence—screenshots, emails, usernames, and timestamps. Reporting the blackmail to law enforcement and relevant platforms can prevent it from escalating. There’s a solid breakdown of what to do in these situations here: https://www.vajiracoop.com/forum/topic/2280/reporting-internet-blackmail:-what-you-need-to-know. Your friend should follow these steps carefully to minimize risk. Time is of the essence, but so is handling it correctly.

This is something a lot of people don’t think about until it happens to them. Seeing a clear course of action laid out is really useful, especially since blackmailers rely on victims feeling powerless. Knowing there are legal and practical ways to respond is reassuring.
