Ronnie and I both saw "Super 8" last weekend .. after discussing it.. I think we both agreed that it was a very good, but fell a bit short of the classic we had anticipated. Ronnie gave it a 7 out 10.. while I leaned more towards an 8 out of 10. And I must say that until the ending .. it was going get a 9 out of me.
The beginning of the movie by the railroad tracks with the kids was just incredible and set a great tone for the film. Overall, the kids scenes throughout the movie made us both feel a bit nostalgic and think of our childhoods.
I don't want to really give much away yet about "Super 8".. but I encourage anyone that is a fan of movies such as The Goonies, The Monster Squad, E.T., or Close Encounters of the Third Kind to give "Super 8" a chance.
Oh and if you're a Kyle Chandler fan.. he delivers another great performance as a father that is also the Deputy Sheriff of the town.
So who's already seen it or plans to soon?

I watched the trailer couple of days ago and it looks interesting. Small town, set in ´79 = gotta be good, shame if the ending ruins it.
It´s great that Kyle Chandler got the role, liked him since the Homefront tv-series (´91-´93)

the ending was still good.. so don't let that discourage you. It just wasn't up to par with other parts of the movie in my opinion.
I'm telling you if you are fan of any of the movies mentioned above that you should rush to see it.
It is still an outstanding movie that will remind you of being a kid. I just had very high expectations was all .. I still enjoyed it a lot!!
Go watch it as soon as you can!

i completely agree about the scenes with the kids,.. so awesome. if more people here see it, then i will write more but the movie does fall a bit short. it doesn't really take much from it though, considering the reason why.
still a cute movie. the kids did an excellent job!

Ronnie.. did you read the new Entertainment magazine yet with the "Super 8" article?
I was amazed that Elle Fanning was only 13 and the fact Joel Courtney was plucked off the streets for this movie. They both were outstanding!

I loved the beginning, loved them capturing the 70s time period. I had been hoping that the alien looked more along the lines of E.T. and not like a Transformer.

Despite its story flaws, I thought Super 8 was a very enjoyable movie that I would love to see again.
The characters were awesome, and it was well directed by Abrams.
The ending certainly doesn't ruin the film, but the story was not as tight as it should have been - almost like he tried to cram too much into the plot. As a result the 3rd act doesn't work near as well as the first half of the movie.
That being said, I still highly recommend seeing it. As I said before, the characters are simply great and it is very funny as well.
Just like Valley said - if you are a fan of older Spielberg movies, Goonies, etc, do yourself a favor and go see this movie.
Oh yeah, don't leave when the credits start rolling, as half of the theater did when I saw it. You will miss one of the best parts of the movie.

John .. great point about not getting up and leaving too soon. I thought that was a hidden gem of fun that Abrams gave us at the end of "Super 8".
And Jamie .. welcome to the Rewind .. it makes sense that a bionic woman would be tired of an alien transformer. ha

I wasn't too interested, but now I want to see it...primarily based on Valley's references to the older movies. I'll shoot for this weekend...it's here now and hopefully will hang on for another week, as the movies change on Fridays. Would like to see Green Lantern as well, so may have to try to justify seeing two movies!

Thanks Valley. Kevdugp73-Super 8 does have alot of 80s references...Poltergeist, Close Encounters, E.T, Stand by Me, and The Goonies. It isn't a movie I would watch again, but it was better than Thor and XMEN.

My wedding anniversary was yesterday, so date night for me and my wife (dinner and a movie), and...Super8 it was! I absolutely loved it! They captured the late 70's perfectly. Great character developement. I'm a fan....may even make an exception and buy a DVD that's not from the 80's....this will have a place on my shelf for sure. Thanks for the "push" guys. My wife liked it too!
I agree about the alien...wish they toned it down a bit. Also, while the train wreck was super cool...and super loud....I thought it was a bit much....it just kept going and going and going.....a bit of overkill maybe? Still great great great in my book!

Just watched Super 8 and i liked it very much.
Like kev, i didn´t enjoy the train wreck. Too much cgi and havoc. Also, did they create the alien after the Transformers blueprints? And it´s voice too?
Apart from these complains i loved the film. Nice late 70s feel, enjoyable atmosphere, characters and story.

"Super 8" is an excellent film, I was just disappointed in the ending really. The reviews for the blu-ray are fantastic with regard to picture and sound. Once I saw that it offered a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless soundtrack which is the stuff of legends .. I just had to order it.
The beginning minus the train crash reminds me of my childhood friends and our collective imagination. It is really cool that one of my best friends actually grew up to be a successful actor living in LA.
Keep dreaming everyone!
