The celebration officially started today. Originally created as bit players by Pierre "Peyo" Culliford in the October 1958 issue of his medieval comic series Johann et Pirlouit (yes, those two guys you saw in a few episodes), they proved popular enough to eventually get their own comic series a few years later, and through Hanna-Barbera the animated series beginning in 1981 and running for 10 seasons in all (you may also recall the animated film The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, released in France in the late 70s and rereleased in English here after the series proved popular). Fifty years later, they show no sign of slowing down, with a CGI film set for release next year, so rest assured they'll be here to stay for years to come.

BRAINY: ...and I never doubted for one moment that Papa Smurf... (gets pitched out of village)...HAD LOST HIS POWERS!!!!!

Wow, I had no idea, I really thought that they were thought up in the 70's and then made into a cartoon. I also had no idea that they were going to have a major film released. That is cool. I will be ready to see that one when it comes out.

I didn't think they went back that far either, I thought 60's or 70's at most. I knew it was a euro cartoon like Asterix and Obelix. The smurfs were good fun, always loved that long running joke, "is it much farther Papa Smurf?" "Yes it is"!
