I know , I know, a LOT of people are going to tell me I'm crazy and that kids shouldnt be watching horror movies at all. Heres the thing though: My daughter has decided we're going to watch a Halloweeny type movie every day this week til Halloween. Last night we watched NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (I have the special edition and never realized that the Tim Burton shorts VINCENT and FRANKENWEEINE were on there! We watched those too!)
Tonight is going to be CORPSE BRIDE, and Im guessing EDWARD SCISSORHANDS will be next (What can I say: She likes Tim Burton)
I hve TROLL and DEADLY FRIEND on vhs.
I just went online and ordered CATS EYE (Cheap too! $3-)
and Im wondering what other Halloween type movies would be good for an 8 year old but enjoyable for grown ups to watch too.

Good choices, I would go for something like Beatlejuice, Hocus Pocus, maybe Teen wolf, my best friend is a vampire, and Once bitten.

Riptide those are all excellent choices. Another great one that my son loves is CLUE. It has mystery and laughs. I really love Hocus Pocus too it so cute.

I was thinking about BEETLE JUICE! She really likes Tim Burton for some reason and I think that one might be a good pick. Its not too scary either.

Not horror, but Halloweentown is a great Halloween movie. I think they're making a fourth one this year (maybe fifth), but even if you don't watch all of them, the first one is a classic. Disney Channel should play them pretty soon, if they haven't already.

Little Shop of Horrors might be a good one, that is, if your daughter is okay with a singing plant that wants to eat people.

Transylvania 6-5000 is child appropriate, but she might lose interest depending on her attention span. Little Monsters is SUPPOSED to be for kids, but there's the occasional swear word or explosion to look out for. Chances are, some of the jokes will only be understood by the adults. [Wink]

Jurassic Park? I don't know if that counts as Halloween for you.

Sleepy Hollow is Tim Burton, but I'd wait until she's older for that one due to the decapitations and violence. But, she'll love it when she's older anyway, any Tim Burton fan is in love with Johnny Depp (even the guys).

Eight-legged Freaks is an homage to old monster movies with spiders, but somehow ends up goofier than the movies it's paying homage to. It's rated PG-13, and has some bug violence and pee jokes (oh, and a couple dead bodies--there isn't any graphic gore as far as people are concerned, but I guess since she's been watching Beetlejuice, dead people don't concern her too much if it's comical).

Definitely, for sure, Casper. The live action one. I love that movie, and it's child appropriate definitely. Casper Meets Wendy is also a really cute one, though I'd leave Casper: A Spirited Beginning alone (I didn't like it so much, and I don't remember a lot of it now).

And, yes, DISNEY CHANNEL is playing all the HALLOWEENTOWN movies this month,

Once Bitten is probably not appropriate for anyone under 12. How old is your daughter? It could help me suggest movies. I am waiting for AMC's Monsterfest before I start watching only Halloween movies and listening to only Halloween music (No I will not run out, I have plenty).

Well, when I was a kid, I'd watch the really old horror movies on TV. Arsenic and Old Lace is probably the funniest black comedy ever made. And there were a bunch of Abbot and Costello movies with guys like Frankenstein and the Wolfman.

At the other end of the spectrum are the horror movies that are so bad that they're hilarious. Like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Plan 9 From Outer Space, and The Blob. They're so stupid that they can't scare anybody.

mamamiasweetpeaches- The movie is great if you like Johnny Depp, but I think it might be a little violent for 8. But it's your choice--if your daughter is okay with that, then go for it.

my kid saw the blob-1988. she seems to like 80s horror movies but wouldn't watch today's horror movies and it's better that way. she's only 6.

my daughter loves halloween town! we are waiting for the new one next week. she also likes beetlejuice, monster squad,...& nightmare before christmas.
deadly friend is a good choice, mamamia.

What about Ghostbusters? That one's a pretty good Halloween flick. Or Gremlins (though that's more Christmas).

Critters, Tremors, Ghoulies and an underappreciated movie (if you can locate it) Saturday the 14th. Most of these are rated PG-13 and may be a little too scary for an 8 year old. I was watching Halloween at that age but I had little supervision as a child.

Also, if you're going to let her watch Sleepy Hollow, Army of Darkness is quite tame. I don't know for sure why it's rated R (could be the recap of the hand-hack scene from the second Evil Dead film at the beginning, or the use of the F word once), but the violence is very tame compared to the first two films it follows. However, it recaps what happened in the first two movies...and you really don't need to know much to follow the story. Sword and sorcery type stuff, but it's got zombies, so Halloween-ish.

Tremors? It's PG-13. If it's too boring for the kid, the fourth one is a prequel (so you don't need to watch the first three) and has an old west theme going on. Oh, and giant worms.

Cursed is a more modern one, and it has two versions: PG-13 and Unrated. I'd recommend renting the PG-13 version if you're going to check it out (the unrated one has a torso crawling around after half the girl was eaten-kinda disturbing for little ones). It's kinda like a pilot for the WB that didn't quite make it...but y'know, about werewolves. It's kinda funny at times when it's not supposed to be (and sometimes the jokes are actually funny when they're supposed to be). Also, some werewolf humor and the guy that plays Lex Luther on Smallville with a wig on (he looks better with hair, ha).
