I never had headbanger long hair back in the 80's but I did know some guys that did. I used to use some mousse and gel when I had a semi mullet but I went antural twoard the end of high school and just used water. I know girls tenede to use much more than guys, and just wanted to know if people used a lot more of the stuff than now.

I should have had shares in a gel company. I had a mullet, but the top half was almost like a shell! I swear my head was waterproof...
I've never gone a day without some sort of product in my hair for nearly 20 years. I've used gel (and I still have some for emergencies), wax, fudge, gum, you name it. Right now I'm using Tigi Hard Head mohawk gum. It's great stuff, a little bit goes a very long way and it keeps my rat tail and fauhawk in place all day.

In the 80's I used a lot of mousse on my curls, I think it added body to my hair. Also lots of hair spray. Then in the early 90's I quit using so much product, using just hair spray on my bangs. Then in the early 2000's when my hair was growing back in after chemo, I used a lot of gel to keep it in place- I had an Alphalpha thing going on in the back of my head and needed the gel to hold it down! Now my hair is long again and I just use some smoothing cream and hair spray. If I were to use all of that product that I used in the 80's, I think my scalp would peel off.

I could never really get my hair to do what I wanted with mousse...I liked hairspray. Remember STIFF STUFF? That gave the best headbangin height.

mamamia, my best friend used to use Stiff Stuff- she had the biggest hair ever! I never had huge high hair, just semi-high. Another friend of mine, her bangs were so high, they barely fit into her senior picture! She used like 1/2 can of hairspray a day!

Never heard of it. Nowadays, that sounds more like the name of a Viagra-type of male enhancement drug!

Stiff Stuff? Wasn't that what Cameron Diaz had in her hair in "Something about Mary"?

I also remember reading what celebrities supposedly used and the trying ity....with disasterous results: BILLY IDOL claimed he used toothpaste and Robert Smith claimed he used sugar and water. Those guys must have had bees chasing them down the street!

I remember hearing of guys with mohawks using super glue to get it to stay up, heh, heh. Yes the stiff stuff does sound like a Viagra-type drug!

I also heard of punkers using model glue or something to get that stiff spiky look. I also heard that Ian Mcculloch of Echo and the Bunnymen used to use coca-cola in his hair to get that high altitude, he also once said that when he would play a gig outdoors, the flies and such would be attracted to his mane.

This is so funny because I wasn't even certain that they still made mousse. Like they used to anyway, there is so much gel and silkening solutions out there now I think that mousse had a place in today's hair world.
I loved Finesse shampoo/conditioner and mousse. Whenever I smell Finesse to this day I am taken back to 8th grade, getting ready for school in the first house that I lived in where I got my very own bedroom.
I also remember the Aussie stuff that came in a purple bottle.

Just a few years back when I had blonde hair, I used coloured Sunsilk mousse to give myself a new colour every couple of days. My favorite colour was tangerine.

Does anyone remember ZAZU? You could temporarily put colors like pink and purple in your hair and it would wash out in 2 weeks. I had my hair frosted and then put pink Zazu in it and IT NEVER WASHED OUT!!!! Soon after the stuff wasnt for sale anymore so I guess a few people had that happen and complained.
This might be a NYC thing: MANIC PANIC hair dye? More permanent than ZAZU. I used to do colors like red and green.

I remember the amount of Aqua Net that my cousin used to go through. It used to be only 88 cents a can and would only last her a couple of days because she used so much. Had to keep the big hair big, you know!
