Have any of you been watching it? Oh man, it is a total trip! I love it! I've seen them do segments on My Little Pony, Spyrograph, Laser Tag, Care Bears, Hello Kitty and more! I wish I could get this whole thing on DVD. In fact, that thought leads me to another, why hasn't Vh-1 released the I Love the 80's series on DVD? I would buy that in a heartbeat just to see all the great clips and commercials and old interviews.

Have they mentioned Domino Rally yet? I always enjoyed playing that--when we could get the whole thing set up perfectly, that is.

I saw parts of it last night. I can't stand Mo Rocca though, and they went back to getting all the annoying commentators for this show.
I loved Toys in the 70's and 80's. I loved my Pogo Stick. That Turbo Pogo looked pretty wicked, it can jump 6 feet in the air.
My favorite toys were Shrinky Dinks, Play-Doh, Lite-Brite, Spirograph, The Jaws Game, The Creepy Crawler maker, Colorforms, I loved Barbies, I had a Tiffany Taylor doll- she was cool. My brother played with match box cars and legos.

I agree cindy, they should put "I Love The 80s" on DVD. It would be nice to add special features, like a whole section of commericals. I know they show on or two on each show but I wouldlove to see more!
I also think a section of the PSA's(public service announcments) would be great too. I remember seeing those after school when I watched my mid-day kid shows.
Wow, that would be a greadt DVD set.....

My son said that this show was on, and I should come watch it, so since I hadn't seen very much of it, I went to go watch it, my son had left the room, but I was going to call him when they started talking about anything that was cool that I remembered. I could not believe it! They had all those raunchy disgusting commentators on there again, and every single thing that they referenced a toy too was sexual. I am so furious. They were talking about the game of LIFE, and said give me a game that talks about depression and low sperm count, and blah blah.....and then they bleeped out the f-word again on everything everyone was saying. Then they showed the game operation, they made sexual jokes about where the "bread basket" was on the guys body, and then they talked about stretch armstrong and they shaped him in to a man's body part, and said disgusting stuff about him too, and it was on every toy they talked about. I thought, this is about "toys" right. Why do they do that?? This is why kids have nothing to play with anymore, because there's no toys out there like these, and I wanted my kid to see it, but he can watch it, they said words I would die if he heard them, and I can't even believe they didn't bleep the one word...which was a sexual word, that blew me away. I just tried to find a customer service email for VH-1, and I looked EVERYWHERE on that site for one, cause I wanted to tell them that's another low grade disgusting mess they made out of something that could have been awesome, why they do shows like that...I don't get. They are talking about children's toys. There's something really wrong with that, and I can't believe that I am the only person who sees it. My husband was sitting there too with his mouth hanging open, and couldn't believe it either, my mom walked by and said...oh what are you guys watching, and she saw it and said, awwweee...that is just terrible that they do stuff like that on television. She said, what is the purpose of any of that? And I said...I don't know, but I don't care if I ever watch another thing on VH-1 for the rest of my life, cause it is nothing but garbage.
I taped the I love the 80's shows, and I can't watch them...because they ruin the 80's, they don't talk about how cool it was, they trash it, they act like everything was stupid, and they make fun of all of it, and then they do the sex talking about every single topic you can come up with, there is always someone to throw in some kind of comment that is sexual, it is so beyond bad taste.

Oh...I remember the other thing they were doing that made me sick...They took the game Mad Libs, and put dirty words in them, and the dirty words...were really dirty, and I keep thinking, that isn't funny...people have this warped sense of humor...that everything has to be sexual, and perverse...and when you say a dirty word...people laugh their head off..I don't get that, I don't find those words to be funny. That kind of thing has been done a billion times, it is nothing original, and is it necessary??, I mean...they can't come up with actual words the way the game was meant to be played? Because it is meant to be funny all on it's own. I swear the whole thing was sickening, and I have no idea what the purpose of any of that was, they put a whole different perspective on Mad Libs, that I didn't need to think about.

I caught part of the list and found it entertaining, although definitely in a been there/done that way. I wasn't majorly into toys as a kid, but I did love those circular pulltoys (i.e. with farmer sounds and animals), so I loved seeing that one.
As for their jokes and overall behavior, I think it can get tiring after awhile too, but I'm sure they're just doing that to appeal to certain audiences. There ARE people out there who wouldn't watch it if it were done more "straight". So in a way, it's cool that it may get the perhaps edgier people interested in it, but at the same time, unfortunate that it has to be that way.
You know, I've often wondered if these type of shows are scripted or not. Even if it isn't, perhaps what they say has to be to the liking of whoever is in charge of the show, so I wouldn't necesarilly think it's coming 100% from "them".
In other words, if someone tracked down Mo Recca on the street and asked him what he honestly thought about something in the '80s, or a toy, etc. chances are his response would be at least a little different than that. I'm sure their attitude is at least partially geared the way it is because it's a TV show and tries to be entertaining (albiet too much sometimes).
Just as a parallel example, take Jerry Springer. He's a really caring, smart guy who used to be in politics (mayor of Cincinnati, in fact!), but because he hosts that show and is generally friendly/fun/cool with the guests, he's looked at as "trashy". I don't always like that show, but I know that's not how he is in real life (he's even admitted it's silly, yet respects the guests as generally good people even if he disagrees with their lifestyles or views).
I'll bet it's the same thing with these commentators. The unfortunate thing, IMO, isn't how they behave, it's the fact they have to say stuff like that to draw in an audience.

I think then if they aren't really like that, then they are sell outs, for money. Plus, the kind of people that find that stuff funny, are just as trashy, and usually they are grown men who have the mentality of a 14 year old.
I think your totally responsible to the public for what you project on tv. If your giving your "opinion" then it better be your own opinion, otherwise you have lied to the public, and then your just as bad, if not worse.
Jerry Springer's show is horrible, and he has to take the responsibility for that...if he wouldn't talk like that to people in his family, or around his own children, then why do it in front of people you don't know.
I saw Michael Ian Black on the I love toys thing, and he was saying something so stupid...and he said "I have done so many of these shows, that I don't even know what I am talking about, he said something like...he'd shove something up his butt, if they asked him too.
That's pretty sad, because with each show you are talking about completely different subjects, like each thing they discussed in the I love the 80's, was all different, just like the I love toys was all about toys, and none of the stuff was repeated, so if he can't think of something to say, then he's in the wrong profession, cause the stuff they did say was horrible.
I was talking to cindymancini on the phone just a little while ago, and we were talking about this, and I told her some of the words they used in the Mad Lib thing they did. And they said a word, that I would die if my kid heard it, it to me was worse than the f-word.
I was thinking about that song I wrote on the 70's site...Mr. Jaws...how cute that was done, and it was funny. I read it to my son and he laughed at it, just from me reading it, and I thought....comedy does not have to be dirty. Bill Cosby to me was hysterical, and he wasn't a smut mouth, like the people of today are. And he appealed to millions of people.
I think they repluse more people than attract them, cause nobody I know wants to hear that stuff, I wouldn't hang out with people who did.
I have never had a clue why they do those things.

Yeah, "PG rated"/non sexual/safe humor doesn't seem to be as marketable or cool anymore, which is unfortunate.
I've commonly said my favorite humor is in this vein. If I had to pick three comedic people that have influenced and entertained me, probably Weird Al Yankovic, Jerry Seinfeld, Michael J. Fox and the Full House cast (okay, that's four, LOL). They're all very youthful and intelligent, but I do like they can be cool without pushing the envelope.
I agree kids probably shouldn't watch alot of the VH1 stuff these days (almost every program is TV14). There's no easy answer with things like this, I'll admit, which makes it frustrating at times. Overall, it's the culture being as it is now (since 1997 probably, with the advent of South Park and such) that probably makes many popular shows be this way.
Perhaps since boundaries have been pushed as far as they can, nothing else can break through as easy as it once did, and you have to be edgy to be cool. VH1 markets that stuff because they fear (and perhaps rightly so), that it's the only thing that will appeal to a group of 16, 18 or 20-year old guys sitting around watching it.
As for Jerry Springer, the show has become overly stupid, but I think he's a good guy. I watched some of the early shows (around 1994/95 - before it got wild. It was starting to be youth minded, but they did serious shows too), and one in particular really stood out to me, relating to the Holocaust (his parents were survivors, while many of his family members were killed in it). He talked about visiting his parents when they were older, and his dad keeping this old car he rarely drove in their apartment building. When he asked his dad why he didn't sell it, he told Jerry, "What if I need it to get away?" (meaning that memories of the Holocaust taking place in his country were still with him, despite living in the USA for many years).
Something on those lines, but I really remember he was almost crying just trying to tell the story. He also did other ones where he tried to help people (i.e. homeless teens living on the street), so I guess I viewed him a little differently than if I had only known of him when the show got wild and crazy around 1998.

My mom and I were talking about a song we heard on XM radio on the 50's, and they were singing about how parents didn't like their music, and they thought Rock N Roll was really risque for back then, and my mom said, it was really like that...she said if the parents back then could look ahead 40-50 years and see what the world has become, they would never think that stuff was bad, but for then it was.
I said...well.. where we are now...how much worse can it get?? I don't think you could think up a shocking thing that has not been done, that's all it is about today, shocking people, looking like trash, and talking like trash, and having no self respect for yourself or anybody around you, people don't care, they don't have any morals, people aren't shocked by anything.
I heard the song by Randy Newman yesterday called "Short People". If that song came out today ...people would jump on him and short people everywhere would sue his butt, but you can sing about the f-word all day long, and nobody says a thing. Life is messed up.

Yeah, like I said, I think in the 1997-2001 period, things got as controversial as they could in the mainstream. I mean, without literally killing people onstage, or doing a porno, there's no more shocking you can get.
It remains to be seen whether or not it'll revert to being more innocent, or if pop culture will continue to be an upgraded version of all the stuff we've been living with in the last seven or eight years. If trends keep up, I'm sure that a 13 year old in 2015 won't want to live with stuff that was cool fifteen years ago, and they'll want to bring back, say the '80s (much the way the '50s was retro cool in the first half of the '80s). They will probably think South Park and Eminem-type culture is stupid and corny.
P.S. Random other note about Jerry Springer - I once read something about, when he was mayor of Cincinnati (late '70s), he promoted rock concerts and gave out a key to the city to stars he wanted to meet. I recall him mentioning Billy Joel as one of them. Just a side observation I thought was cool.
Double P.S. I think his '80s stuff was very retro '50s (i.e. "Uptown Girl" or "The Longest Time").

Yeah, times certainly have changed since then. One year, we're suing Prince for writing a certain song, then the next year, we're getting all in a riot over South Park. (Mostly me, LOL!)
But I wish that good, clean, Full-House humor did come back. Kids need to be exposed to that a lot more than they need to be exposed to S.P.

^ Full House was great, wasn't it? Jesse and Joey had that "PG rated coolness" about them. Even if the hairstyles or fashions are a bit dated now, the general things the show was about are still very relevant.
Even back then, some people viewed it as "cheesy" but sadly, there's no way a show like that could come out today, unless it was on, say Nickelodeon.
