It is a fact that many shows today don't have proper theme songs because network execs are paranoid about people changing the channel during them. Also, sitcoms especially are shorter than they used to be (24-25 minutes in the 70s and 80s, as opposed to 21-22 minutes today) and the produers need as much time as possible for story/plot. So, for those unfortunate reasons, good tv theme songs are generally a thing of the past. :-/
I was recently listening to LOTS of great sitcom themes from the 70s, 80s and 90s on SitcomsOnline.com. Definitely check that site out if you're interested in this sorta thing!
Some of my favorite themes from yesteryear...
Charles in Charge Day by Day Diff'rent Strokes Doogie Howser Family Ties Gimme a Break! (Cause I sure need onnne!) Growing Pains Hogan Family (LOVE this one!) It's a Living! (Catchy as hell) Just the Ten of Us Laverne & Shirley Mr. Belvedere Out of this World (Wooould yooou like to swing on a star? Whoa whoa whoa!) Perfect Strangers Punky Brewster Saved by the Bell Silver Spoons Small Wonder (I prefer the 80s style version to the "tra la la la" one) Who's the Boss?
You can hear all these themes and plenty more at SitcomsOnline.com

I love Greatest American Hero's theme song. If anyone watches the Gilmore Girls, Lane's band did a punk version of it, it was quite entertaining with Sebastian Bach on lead vocals. I love the Miami Vice theme, it has to be one of the best, and the music throughout each episode was great too. Welcome Back Kotter was great too. I gotta think on some more!
